Practical overview
When it fits
Use XELIS when the project requires a programmable blockchain with encrypted balances and transfer amounts, BlockDAG-based ordering, proof-of-work mining or a local development network.
Who it is for
- Blockchain developers building privacy-preserving transactions, assets or applications.
- Researchers examining BlockDAG ordering, mining and difficulty-adjustment mechanisms.
- Operators building XELIS daemon, miner or wallet components from source.
Documented uses
- Build the XELIS daemon, miner or wallet from Rust source.
- Experiment with a local devnet or use the listed mainnet and testnet network modes.
- Develop encrypted transactions and privacy-preserving assets.
- Deploy smart-contract programs in the xelis-vm sandbox.
- Study or operate mining infrastructure using Egalitarian Proof of Work.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and uses the BSD-3-Clause license. The project lists Linux, Windows and macOS support and provides mainnet, testnet and peerless local devnet modes.
- Rust, clang and cmake are required for the documented source build.
- Smart contracts execute in the project's sandboxed xelis-vm environment.
- Devnet is intended for local development and has no peers.
- Mining uses Egalitarian Proof of Work designed for CPU or GPU participation.
- Default daemon, P2P and wallet ports are documented as 8080, 2125 and 8081 respectively.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build a XELIS binary from source
Compile the XELIS daemon, miner or wallet from the repository.
Before you start
- A working stable Rust toolchain
- clang and cmake packages
- A Linux, Windows or macOS environment, as listed by the project
Steps
Choose the xelis_daemon, xelis_miner or xelis_wallet subproject.
Run the documented release build command: cargo build --release.
Alternatively, build a selected workspace binary with the documented --bin option, or use the Docker build with the app build argument.
Expected outcome
A release build of the selected XELIS component is produced according to the repository's build instructions.
Guide limitations
- The documented build procedure does not by itself describe network operation, deployment or application execution.
- The Docker instruction requires choosing which project to build through the app argument.
