Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use K2 when operating validator infrastructure for the Koii network or developing a system that needs its settlement and message-hub role.

Who it is for

  • Operators preparing a Koii consensus validator or RPC node.
  • Developers building systems that exchange messages or handle settlement within the Koii network.

Documented uses

  • Prepare a server and configure it to run a K2 validator.
  • Create validator, vote, stake and authorized-withdrawer keypairs with the Koii CLI.
  • Set up validator voting and stake accounts, delegate stake and check delegation status.
  • Build Koii-network systems that use K2 for messaging or settlement.

Requirements & limits

The K2 repository is public. The supplied repository evidence does not specify a license.

  • The documented minimum for a consensus validator is 256 GB memory, 12 cores and 24 threads at 2.8 GHz or more, with at least 500 GB for accounts and 2 TB for the ledger.
  • Ubuntu 22.04 is the operating system whose binaries the guide says are being tested; operation of binaries for other operating systems is not guaranteed.
  • The guide separates key generation from validator operation and says the stake-account and authorized-withdrawer keypairs must remain off the validator.
  • The guide states there is no minimum KOII amount to stake and participate in voting, but server setup and voting and stake-account configuration are still required.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare a server and keys for a K2 validator

Set up the documented prerequisites for validator operation, including CLI configuration and separated key generation.

Before you start

  • A properly sized server; the guide gives Ubuntu 22.04 as the operating system whose binaries are being tested.
  • Koii CLI installed on the validator and on a separate secure computer for keypair generation.
  • A secure location away from the validator for the stake-account and authorized-withdrawer keypairs.

Steps

  1. Update the Ubuntu system and install the listed base packages.

  2. Create and switch to the koii user, then install and configure the Koii CLI on the validator.

  3. On the separate secure computer, use the Koii CLI to create the validator, vote-account, stake-account and authorized-withdrawer keypairs.

  4. Transfer the validator and vote-account keypairs to the validator server; keep the stake-account and authorized-withdrawer keypairs in a secure location off that server.

Expected outcome

The server and key materials are prepared for the guide’s subsequent validator setup stages.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers prerequisites and key handling, not starting or confirming operation of a validator.
  • The guide says other operating-system binaries are provided but their operation is not guaranteed.
