Reverse Engineering Assistant (REA)

Reverse Engineering Assistant (REA) is a Rust command-line reverse-engineering tool that analyzes binaries and firmware using deterministic techniques and an optional autonomous multi-agent AI loop. It generates Markdown and PDF reports beside the target and also provides an MCP server for AI coding-agent workflows.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use REA when you need a command-line workflow to triage a supported binary or firmware target and save findings as reports. Choose deterministic mode for offline analysis, or configure an OpenRouter key for the autonomous AI analysis loop; use the MCP server when the intended interface is an AI coding agent.

Who it is for

  • Reverse engineers triaging executable files, firmware and package formats.
  • Security analysts who need structured technical findings and reports.
  • Developers who want reverse-engineering tools available to an MCP-compatible coding agent.

Documented uses

  • Inspect binary metadata, imports, hashes, strings and indicators.
  • Analyze firmware and supported executable or package formats.
  • Produce Markdown and PDF analysis reports beside a target file.
  • Expose reverse-engineering operations such as function listing, decompilation and string search to coding agents through MCP.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. Building from source requires the stable Rust toolchain. The AI analysis loop requires an OpenRouter API key; deterministic offline analysis is documented without one.

  • AI-assisted analysis depends on an OpenRouter API key, while deterministic offline reporting is available without one.
  • REA detects formats from file contents, and its documented target range includes common executable formats, firmware, Go and .NET binaries, Android packages and Electron archives.
  • The repository documents embedded SLEIGH specifications for non-x86 disassembly and says Ghidra, Java, Python and external command-line tools are not required for that capability.
  • MCP integration is distinct from the CLI report workflow and exposes 12 named reverse-engineering tools.

Source-based practical guide

Build REA from source on Linux

Prepare a local REA build from the repository using the documented Rust build process.

Before you start

  • Stable Rust toolchain
  • Git

Steps

  1. Clone https://github.com/mytechnotalent/rea.git.

  2. Change into the rea repository directory.

  3. Follow the repository's operating-system-specific Cargo build instructions.

Expected outcome

A source build is prepared using the repository's documented process; this guide does not specify a Linux target command because the available build instructions are incomplete.

Guide limitations

  • The available build instructions include full commands for Windows x64 and macOS Apple Silicon, but not a complete Linux build command.
Source-based practical guide

Configure the AI analyst key

Provide REA with the API key required to enable its autonomous multi-agent analysis loop.

Before you start

  • An OpenRouter API key

Steps

  1. Set OPENROUTER_API_KEY in the shell environment or in a .env file.

  2. Place the .env file in the current directory or an ancestor directory from which REA is run.

  3. Optionally set OPENROUTER_MODEL to select a model.

Expected outcome

REA can locate the configured key for its AI analysis loop; without a key it uses deterministic offline mode.

Guide limitations

  • The API key is required for the AI analysis loop; the deterministic mode is the documented no-key alternative.
