Practical overview

When it fits

Use Ralph when a software task benefits from iterative agent work, structured planning or checks that can reject incomplete results. The CLI supports both planned feature work and direct prompts for simpler tasks.

Who it is for

  • Developers who want AI agents to plan and implement software tasks through repeated runs.
  • Teams or individuals using supported coding-assistant CLIs who want specialized agent roles and completion gates.
  • MCP client users who want to connect Ralph to a single workspace.

Documented uses

  • Turn a feature request into requirements, a design and an implementation plan.
  • Run an agent against a task until it signals completion or reaches an iteration limit.
  • Coordinate specialized personas for coding, debugging, research and review.
  • Apply checks such as tests, linting and type-checking as gates on incomplete work.
  • Serve orchestration functionality to an MCP-compatible client.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The CLI is open source under the MIT license and can be installed through npm, Cargo or a GitHub Releases installer. The web dashboard is labeled alpha. Its frontend requires Node.js 18 or later and npm; its API requires a Rust toolchain.

  • Ralph is a CLI framework rather than a hosted agent service; its documented setup initializes a coding-assistant backend.
  • The documented loop ends when it outputs LOOP_COMPLETE or reaches its iteration limit.
  • The web dashboard is alpha and may have rough edges and breaking changes.
  • MCP server instances are scoped to one workspace root, so multi-repository use calls for one instance per workspace.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Plan and implement a feature with the CLI

Initialize a backend, create a feature plan and run an agent against the resulting specification.

Before you start

  • Install Ralph through npm, Cargo or the GitHub Releases installer.
  • Have an AI coding-assistant CLI available for the selected backend.

Steps

  1. Run ralph init --backend claude to initialize Ralph with the Claude backend.

  2. Run ralph plan "Add user authentication with JWT" to create requirements, design and implementation-plan files.

  3. Run ralph run -p "Implement the feature in .ralph/specs/user-authentication/".

Expected outcome

Ralph iterates on the implementation until it outputs `LOOP_COMPLETE` or reaches its iteration limit.

Guide limitations

  • The example uses Claude as the backend; other supported backends are also listed in the project documentation.
  • Iteration may stop at the configured iteration limit before the completion marker.
Source-based practical guide

Connect an MCP client to a workspace

Run Ralph as an MCP server scoped to one repository or workspace.

Before you start

  • Ralph CLI installed.
  • An MCP-compatible client.

Steps

  1. Run ralph mcp serve --workspace-root /path/to/repo to set the workspace root.

  2. Configure the MCP-compatible client to use Ralph in server mode over standard input and output.

Expected outcome

The server instance uses the selected workspace for Ralph's control-plane data.

Guide limitations

  • Each server instance is scoped to one workspace; use one instance per repository for multi-repository work.
