Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when agent development needs configurable environments and toolkits, with evaluation and benchmarking included in the workflow.
Who it is for
- Developers creating autonomous agents for specific tasks.
- Teams building agent tools or environments.
- Practitioners benchmarking agent behavior.
Documented uses
- Configure and build a custom autonomous agent.
- Develop tools and environments for an agent task.
- Run agents and benchmark their behavior.
Requirements & limits
- The framework is organized around agent configurations, environments and toolkits.
- Its documented scope includes building, running and evaluating agents.
- The evaluation framework supports benchmarking agent behavior.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and configure Youtu-agent for a first run
Set up the project, configure an LLM API key, and start the simple search agent.
Before you start
- Python 3.12 or higher
- Git
- UV package manager
- An API key for an LLM provider, such as DeepSeek
Steps
Clone the project with the command below and enter its directory with
cd youtu-agent.git clone https://github.com/TencentCloudADP/youtu-agent.gitInstall UV using a documented installation method, then create and activate a virtual environment with the command below and the activation command for your operating system.
uv venvInstall dependencies with the command below.
uv sync --group devCopy
.env.exampleto.envand configure the requiredUTU_LLM_TYPE,UTU_LLM_MODEL,UTU_LLM_BASE_URL, andUTU_LLM_API_KEYvalues for your provider.Start the simple search agent with the command below. Type
quit,exit, orqto end the conversation.python scripts/cli_chat.py --config_name simple/search_agent.yaml
Expected outcome
The simple search agent starts in the terminal and accepts questions for a conversation.
Guide limitations
- Serper and Jina API keys are optional; some features may not work without them.
- If errors occur, the guide recommends checking that the UV environment is activated and the
UTU_LLM_*API key is configured correctly.
Create and run a custom simple agent
Define a simple agent with the builtin search toolkit and use it from a Python script.
Before you start
- A set-up Youtu-agent project with dependencies installed
- An LLM API key configured in
.env
Steps
Create
configs/agents/my_agents/my_first_agent.yamlwith defaults loading the base model and builtin search toolkit, and set the agent name and instructions.Create a Python script that imports
asyncioandSimpleAgentfromutu.agents, opensSimpleAgent(config="my_agents/my_first_agent.yaml")in an async context, and callsagent.chat(...).Run the script and try a question supported by the configured agent, such as asking it to search for the latest tech news.
Expected outcome
The script starts the configured simple agent and submits a chat question.
Guide limitations
- The example requires an LLM API key; search-related features may depend on optional tool API keys such as Serper or Jina.
- The guide provides an example question but does not specify a guaranteed response or test result.
