Layer 1

Arxia

Arxia is a Rust-based, offline-first Layer 1 blockchain implementation designed for intermittent or absent internet connectivity. It uses per-account block-lattice chains, gossip synchronization, CRDT state reconciliation and stake-weighted Open Representative Voting consensus, with a transport abstraction for LoRa, BLE, SMS and satellite.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Arxia when you need to evaluate or prototype a blockchain design for intermittent-connectivity environments, or to study its supplied payment, DID, relay and reconciliation examples.

Who it is for

  • Rust developers evaluating a Layer 1 protocol for low-connectivity settings.
  • Teams prototyping offline payment flows or mesh relays.
  • Developers exploring DID issuance or reconciliation of account state across disconnected nodes.

Documented uses

  • Build and test the Arxia workspace with Cargo.
  • Run the included offline-payment, DID-issuance, mesh-relay or partition-reconciliation examples.
  • Explore transport-mediated gossip and CRDT reconciliation across intermittent network links.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and open source, with licensing offered under Apache-2.0 or MIT. The documented workflow uses Rust/Cargo commands.

  • The transport layer is described as supporting LoRa, BLE, SMS and satellite, but the repository does not provide specific hardware compatibility test results.
  • The workspace includes an arxia-did crate and DID issuance example; this supports prototyping, not a claim of production readiness.
  • The arxia-wasm smart-contract runtime is explicitly labeled a stub.
  • Without protoc on PATH, the documented build uses a stub protobuf module.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build the Arxia workspace

Compile the Rust workspace before exploring its included examples.

Before you start

  • A Rust/Cargo development environment
  • The Arxia repository
  • A Protobuf toolchain if the build should use protoc rather than the documented stub fallback

Steps

  1. Obtain the Arxia repository.

  2. From the workspace, run the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo build --workspace

Expected outcome

Cargo is instructed to build the workspace, including its listed crates and example binaries.

Guide limitations

  • The README warns that without protoc on PATH, arxia-proto uses a stub protobuf module.
  • The documented command is a repository instruction, not a claim of an independently verified build.
Source-based practical guide

Run an included Arxia example

Invoke one of the repository's documented workspace-member examples.

Before you start

  • The Arxia repository
  • A Rust/Cargo development environment

Steps

  1. From the workspace, choose an example name: offline_payment, did_issuance, mesh_relay or partition_reconciliation.

  2. Run it with the command below, replacing the placeholder with the selected name.

    Documented command
    cargo run -p

Expected outcome

Cargo invokes the selected example binary as a workspace member.

Guide limitations

  • The README identifies these as workspace-member binaries, not Cargo [[example]] targets.
  • The repository identifies the WASM smart-contract runtime crate as a stub; the examples do not establish production readiness.
