Practical overview
When it fits
Use Avalanchego when the task involves operating or developing around an Avalanche blockchain node, particularly in a self-hosted or server environment. Review its documented hardware requirements before planning node deployment.
Who it is for
- Avalanche Mainnet node operators
- Developers building node-monitoring or operational tooling
- Teams running self-hosted Avalanche infrastructure
- Engineers creating deployment automation for Avalanchego nodes
Documented uses
- Run an Avalanche Mainnet node
- Operate self-hosted Avalanche network infrastructure
- Develop node-monitoring and operational tooling around Avalanchego
- Create deployment automation for Avalanchego nodes
Requirements & limits
The project is hosted in a publicly accessible GitHub repository and is open source under the BSD-3-Clause license. It supports Linux, Windows, macOS and server environments.
- Whether you need an Avalanche node implementation rather than an application built on a blockchain
- The documented hardware requirements for the intended node deployment
- Whether your environment supports the listed platforms and a self-hosted operating model
- Whether BSD-3-Clause licensing fits the planned use
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build AvalancheGo from source
Create the AvalancheGo binary from the repository source.
Before you start
- Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 or macOS 12 or newer.
- Go version 1.26.8 or newer, gcc, and g++.
- A reliable IPv4 or IPv6 network connection is documented for Mainnet nodes.
Steps
Clone the repository with the command below and enter it with
cd avalanchego.git clone git@github.com:ava-labs/avalanchego.gitRun
./scripts/run_task.sh build.Use the resulting binary at
build/avalanchego.Run it with
./build/avalanchego.
Expected outcome
The repository is built and the `avalanchego` binary is available in the `build` directory.
Guide limitations
- The documented Mainnet hardware recommendation is 8 AWS-equivalent vCPUs, 16 GiB RAM, and 1 TiB storage.
- Long-running nodes or custom configurations may require more storage.
- Network usage may change hardware requirements.
Install AvalancheGo from the Ubuntu APT repository
Add the documented AvalancheGo APT repository and install the latest package.
Before you start
- Ubuntu with the documented APT repository commands available.
- Permission to run commands with
sudo. - A reliable IPv4 or IPv6 network connection and an open public port are documented for Mainnet nodes.
Steps
Add the signing key and repository using the documented
wget,tee, and repository-list commands.Run
sudo apt update.Run
sudo apt install avalanchego.
Expected outcome
The latest `avalanchego` package is installed from the configured APT repository.
Guide limitations
- Mainnet node hardware requirements may change as network usage increases.
