Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a book project benefits from a structured concept-to-outline-to-chapters workflow and you can provide an API key for a supported model provider.

Who it is for

  • Writers who want AI assistance developing a book concept, outline and chapter drafts.
  • Writers who want to choose among OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models using their own API keys.

Documented uses

  • Develop a book concept and chapter outline before drafting.
  • Generate chapter content step by step or in an automated sequence.
  • Create AI cover art through OpenAI's Images API.
  • Save a draft locally and export it to a document format.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The documented local setup uses Python 3's HTTP server or Node's `npm start`. A provider API key is needed for model use; OpenAI is required for GPT models and cover-image generation.

  • Provider choice: the application documents OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini model support.
  • Workflow control: use individual concept, outline and chapter stages, or Agent Mode's sequential process.
  • Key handling: keys are stored in browser local storage using base64 encoding and sent to the respective provider API.
  • Export needs: documented formats include TXT, HTML, Markdown, JSON and PDF, plus clipboard copy.
  • Streaming scope: live chapter streaming is documented for OpenAI Chat API.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run the application locally and configure a provider

Open the browser application and add an API key for the model provider you intend to use.

Before you start

  • A local copy of the project
  • A provider API key for the selected model; OpenAI is required for GPT models and cover-image generation
  • Python 3 or Node.js

Steps

  1. Start the project with the command below or the command below.

    Documented command
    python3 -m http.server 8080
    Documented command
    npm start
  2. Open the local application at http://localhost:8080 when using the Python server.

  3. Enter the relevant API key in the Key Settings modal.

Expected outcome

The application opens locally with the selected provider key entered, ready for book configuration.

Guide limitations

  • The documented guide covers setup and key entry, not a verified generation run.
  • Keys are stored in browser local storage using base64 encoding.

Generate a book concept, outline and chapters

Use the documented manual workflow or Agent Mode to create the stages of a book project.

Before you start

  • The application running locally
  • An API key for the provider whose model you plan to use
  • Book configuration fields filled in

Steps

  1. Fill in the book configuration fields.

  2. For manual control, select Generate Concept, then Create Outline, then Write Chapters.

  3. Alternatively, select Generate Complete Book to have Agent Mode produce title suggestions, a concept, an outline and chapters sequentially.

Expected outcome

A book project containing generated planning material and chapter content; Agent Mode displays a live progress log and can be cancelled.

Guide limitations

  • Live word-by-word chapter streaming is documented for the OpenAI Chat API.
  • The repository describes the application as a proof of concept.
