Practical overview
When it fits
Use Aft when a coding agent needs more context-aware repository operations than basic file reads, writes and raw Bash, especially for symbol-level edits, codebase search, refactoring and persistent terminal work.
Who it is for
- Developers using coding agents with OpenCode, Pi or OMP.
- Builders creating agent workflows that need structured repository editing and search.
- Teams using coding agents for codebase analysis, refactoring or long-running terminal tasks.
Documented uses
- Inspect code by file outline, symbol and call-graph context.
- Search repositories with semantic search, grep and glob operations.
- Edit functions or refactor across a workspace with structured operations.
- Run background shell processes and PTY sessions while an agent continues other work.
- Check repository health and retain undo history for supported changes.
Requirements & limits
The project is presented as a public, MIT-licensed repository. The repository references a Rust crate and npm packages for the CLI and OpenCode and Pi adapters.
- Choose it when the agent harness is OpenCode, Pi or OMP, because those integrations are the documented contexts.
- The main implementation is Rust, while setup and harness adapters are distributed through npm package references.
- Aft can replace selected host tools and add an
aft_family, so its effect depends on the harness configuration. - The repository documents setup but the supplied material does not provide an exported API or wrapper implementation.
- Aft's background tasks, PTY support and compressed output address ongoing process management as well as code editing.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Aft for a coding-agent harness
Install Aft's npm setup tool and configure a detected or selected OpenCode, Pi or OMP harness.
Before you start
- A supported OpenCode, Pi or OMP harness installed.
- Access to the Aft npm package through npx.
Steps
Run the command below.
npx @cortexkit/aft@latest setupAllow setup to detect installed harnesses, or target one with
--harness opencode,--harness pior--harness omp.Start the next harness session so the Aft binary can download and the configured tools can become available.
Expected outcome
The selected harness is configured with Aft-backed tools and the additional `aft_` tool family described by the repository.
Guide limitations
- The supplied material does not document the exact configuration for every environment or verify a completed installation.
- The OMP integration uses the Pi plugin.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aft | Inspect code by file outline, symbol and call-graph context. | CLI | The project is presented as a public, MIT-licensed repository. The repository references a Rust crate and npm packages for the CLI and OpenCode and Pi adapters. |
| Spectra | Clarify requirements and compare approaches before proposing a change. | CLI, Desktop | The README lists a macOS and Windows desktop app, and a Homebrew installation for macOS. The CLI is published through npm and requires Node.js 22.14 or newer. |
| Skills — michaelshimeles | Install reusable task-specific skills into a coding-agent setup. | CLI | The repository README provides an npx installation command for most coding agents and describes automatic or explicit skill invocation in Claude Code. |
