Practical overview
When it fits
Use Agent Afk when a coding task can be delegated to a tool-using agent and you want to check its trace or return to the work asynchronously.
Who it is for
- Developers delegating long or multi-step coding tasks and checking in asynchronously.
- Engineers running headless or CI-adjacent agent workflows.
- Developers who want a Telegram interface for supervising and continuing agent sessions.
Documented uses
- Delegate feature implementation or other multi-step software work.
- Run parallel subagent checks on code changes or investigate failing tests.
- Inspect a record of tool calls, decisions and cost after a run.
- Continue or supervise a shared session through the terminal, daemon or Telegram.
Requirements & limits
The documented CLI installation requires a supported Node.js version and model-provider authentication. Telegram use requires a bot token and an allowed chat ID.
- The CLI supports Node 22.22.2–22.x, 24.15–24.x and 26+; Node 23.x and 25.x are excluded.
- The project describes support for multiple model providers, including local models; the documentation's quick start explains Anthropic API-key setup.
- The terminal, daemon and Telegram bot share session context, memory and tools.
- Unattended-run controls include cost ceilings, turn limits, working-directory access approval and optional Git worktree isolation.
- With pnpm 10 or later, the documented postinstall hook may be skipped unless build scripts are approved.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Agent Afk and check configuration
Install the CLI, authenticate with a model provider and check the setup before starting a session.
Before you start
- Node 22.22.2–22.x, 24.15–24.x or 26 and later; Node 23.x and 25.x are excluded.
- An account or credentials for a supported model provider; the quick start detects existing Claude Code or Codex credentials.
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
npm install -g agent-afkRun
afk loginto authenticate.Run
afk doctorto check configuration and provider connectivity.
Expected outcome
The CLI is installed and its configuration and provider connectivity have been checked.
Guide limitations
- This setup sequence does not itself run or verify a coding task.
- The documented Node version ranges exclude Node 23.x and 25.x.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent Afk | Delegate feature implementation or other multi-step software work. | CLI, Self-hosted | The documented CLI installation requires a supported Node.js version and model-provider authentication. Telegram use requires a bot token and an allowed chat ID. |
| Bedrock Engineer | Create project folders and files, read and write project content, and manage project structure. | Cloud, Web | The README describes a native app with downloads for macOS and Windows and build targets for macOS, Windows and Linux. Users must configure AWS credentials. The repository lists an MIT-0 license. |
| Agor | Run coding-agent tasks in separate Git branches with distinct environments and conversation histories. | CLI, Web | The repository documents an npm installation for self-hosting and also points to Agor Cloud Open Beta. It requires Node.js 22.12 or later and Git for the documented npm setup. |
