By the end of this lesson
Confirm Python 3.12 is available on Ubuntu 24.04 and recognise an administrator prompt.
Before you start
- An Ubuntu Server 24.04 practice VPS.
- A regular user account with sudo rights for installation if needed.
Three words to know
- Interpreter
- The program that reads and executes Python source code.
- Package manager
- The operating system’s tool for installing and maintaining packages.
- sudo
- A request to run a command with administrative permissions.
1. Check before installing
python3 --versionWhat you should see · example output
Python 3.12.x on the Ubuntu 24.04 environment used for this route.
If Python 3.12 is already available, skip installation and continue to the workspace check below. A different version is not automatically broken, but this route’s final recipe records its tests on Python 3.12. Use the supported practice environment rather than claiming another version has the same test evidence.
2. Install only if it is missing
sudo apt updateWhat you should see · example output
Repository metadata is refreshed. This does not by itself install all available upgrades.
sudo apt install python3 python3-venvWhat you should see · example output
apt shows proposed packages and may ask for confirmation; after completion the prompt returns.
The sudo password prompt may show no characters. If you are not allowed to use sudo, use your provider’s supported account setup instead of changing random permissions. A package-manager lock means another package operation is running; let it finish. Do not delete its lock files.
3. Recheck in your workspace
python3 --version
cd "$HOME/openvist-learn"
pwdWhat you should see · example output
Python 3.12.x and a path ending in /openvist-learn.
Python is the interpreter; your .py files are the programs it runs. This route needs no pip packages, API keys or paid model service. A virtual environment becomes useful in later lessons that introduce external dependencies; it is not required for this standard-library example.
YOUR TURN
A small check before you continue
If python3 is installed but Python cannot find a particular .py file, should you reinstall the interpreter?
Show a suggested answer
First inspect pwd and ls -la. A missing script path is a separate issue from a missing interpreter.
