Practical overview
When it fits
Use Cargo Chat when you want to explore a local repository through conversational questions rather than relying only on literal text searches.
Who it is for
- Developers navigating or learning an existing codebase
- Users looking for implementations, examples, architectural explanations or debugging context across repository files
Documented uses
- Index a repository for semantic code retrieval.
- Ask questions about how code works and receive answers grounded in retrieved snippets.
- Narrow searches by folder, file extension or exclusion patterns.
Requirements & limits
The documented setup requires building the Rust CLI and providing an OpenAI API key through OPENAI_API_KEY. The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- Indexing uses tree-sitter parsers to split code into structural chunks and respects .gitignore.
- The search pipeline uses Jina or Qwen3 embedding models, an approximate-nearest-neighbor index and a Jina reranker.
- Answer generation sends assembled repository context and the original question to OpenAI.
- The README documents a command-line interactive workflow rather than a hosted web interface.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build, index and query a repository
Prepare Cargo Chat and use its interactive CLI to ask questions about an indexed codebase.
Before you start
- Stable Rust
- An OpenAI API key set as OPENAI_API_KEY
- Internet access and sufficient disk space for embedding-model downloads
Steps
Clone the repository and build it with the command below.
cargo build --releaseSet the
OPENAI_API_KEYenvironment variable and start./target/release/cargo_chat interactive. In interactive mode, index a project with
index --repo /path/to/your/project --out ./my_project_index.Ask a question with
query "How does authentication work in this codebase?".
Expected outcome
Cargo Chat creates an index for the selected repository and uses it to retrieve code context for natural-language questions.
Guide limitations
- Embedding models download on first use.
- The README advises checking that indexing succeeded and rephrasing a question if no results appear.
