Practical overview
When it fits
Use Catalyst when a C# or .NET application needs integrated local text analysis, entity extraction, linguistic annotation or embedding workflows and the team can target the repository’s current .NET versions.
Who it is for
- C# developers building text-processing applications
- .NET teams adding natural-language understanding to software
- Developers creating document-embedding or domain-specific language workflows
- Teams extracting structured entities from text in self-hosted or server environments
Documented uses
- Process documents through a .NET NLP pipeline
- Detect language, tokenize text and assign part-of-speech tags
- Recognize named entities with gazetteer, rule-based or perceptron-based models
- Train word and document embeddings with FastText or StarSpace support
- Store and reload models using stream-based serialization
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies Catalyst as MIT-licensed open-source software. Installation is documented through NuGet, with separate language-model packages.
- The current repository documents .NET 9 and .NET 10 targets.
- Language-specific models require separate NuGet packages and pre-registration.
- Model storage can use disk storage, with lazy loading from disk or the project’s online repository.
- The library supports Windows, Linux, macOS and ARM environments where .NET is supported.
- Older Catalyst and language-package combinations may be incompatible.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up an English Catalyst text-processing pipeline
Install Catalyst and an English language package, configure model storage, and process one English document.
Before you start
- A C#/.NET project targeting .NET 9 or .NET 10.
- The Catalyst NuGet package.
- The corresponding Catalyst English language-model NuGet package.
- Access to the Catalyst model repository or configured disk storage.
Steps
Install the Catalyst NuGet package and the required language package.
Register English with Catalyst.Models.English.Register().
Set storage to a DiskStorage location.
Create an English pipeline with Pipeline.ForAsync(Language.English), create a Document, and pass it to nlp.ProcessSingle(doc).
Expected outcome
The example produces a processed English document that can be serialized with doc.ToJson().
Guide limitations
- The repository notes that language packages built against older Catalyst versions may not load.
- The documented current targets are .NET 9 and .NET 10; earlier listed targets are no longer built.
