Practical overview
When it fits
Use UmaDev when you want an orchestration and planning layer around a supported AI coding CLI, especially for requests that benefit from a fuller delivery workflow. A small edit can remain a small task; deeper work can receive role assignments and planning.
Who it is for
- Developers who already use Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build or Kimi Code.
- Teams or individual developers who want structured planning and role-based checks around coding-agent work.
Documented uses
- Route a software-development request to an existing coding CLI.
- Organize larger coding tasks with a coordinator, selected role assignments and a visible plan.
- Run a coding task interactively or as a non-interactive CLI command.
- Apply project trust settings and confirmation gates to workflow actions.
Requirements & limits
UmaDev is distributed as a Rust binary, with npm and native installation paths documented. Coding requires an installed and authenticated base CLI. The repository identifies the license as MIT.
- UmaDev does not supply its own model endpoint; the selected base CLI supplies the model and generates code.
- Supported bases named in the README are Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build and Kimi Code.
- Roles are bounded workflow assignments, not independent people, and their verdicts are advisory.
- The coordinator manages planning and checks but does not generate code.
- Project trust affects operating mode and whether project configuration is passed to the base CLI.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install UmaDev using npm
Install the UmaDev command-line program globally using its current scoped npm package.
Before you start
- Node.js and npm are available.
- Use the scoped package
@umatech/umadev; the unscopedumadevpackage is retired.
Steps
If the retired unscoped package is installed, remove it with the command below.
npm uninstall -g umadevInstall UmaDev with the command below.
npm i -g @umatech/umadevRun
umadevto launch the chat UI; on first run, choose a base coding CLI.
Expected outcome
UmaDev is installed and its chat UI can be launched. Using it for coding also requires an installed and authenticated supported base CLI.
Guide limitations
- The npm package is a distribution shim for a Rust binary.
- A real coding task requires an installed, authenticated base CLI; the documented options include Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok Build, and Kimi Code.
- If a permission or PATH error occurs, the README directs users to run
umadev doctorfor a fix.
Build UmaDev from source
Compile the UmaDev release binary with local-vector support enabled.
Before you start
- Rust 1.88 or later.
- A compatible local embedding model directory containing
config.json,tokenizer.json, andmodel.safetensorsis needed to use the local vector backend.
Steps
Clone
https://github.com/umacloud/umadev.git.Change into the repository directory with
cd umadev.Build with the command below.
cargo build --release --features vector-localCheck the resulting binary with
./target/release/umadev --version.
Expected outcome
The release binary is built and its version command can be run.
Guide limitations
- The embedding model is not included in the repository; point
UMADEV_EMBED_MODEL_DIRto a compatible model directory or place it at~/.umadev/embed-modelfor local vectors. - Without a usable vector backend,
engine = "hybrid"falls back to BM25-only. - The source README does not establish that a coding task has been executed by this build.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umadev | Route a software-development request to an existing coding CLI. | CLI | UmaDev is distributed as a Rust binary, with npm and native installation paths documented. Coding requires an installed and authenticated base CLI. The repository identifies the license as MIT. |
| Llmcode | Inspect a project's directory structure with `/tree`. | CLI | The documented setup requires an API key and supports an API base URL and model setting. The project is open source under Apache-2.0. |
| Klaat Code | Open a project directory for terminal-based coding assistance. | CLI, Server | The README provides a global npm installation command and documents browser sign-in with a KlaatAI account. It also identifies the repository as open source under Apache 2.0. |
