Tokenizers

Tokenizers is an open-source Rust library for processing text into token sequences and model inputs, with Python and Node.js bindings. It supports encoding text, tokenizing it, decoding token IDs, and assembling tokenization pipelines from models and processing components.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Tokenizers when software needs a tokenizer component between text and a language model or NLP workflow, especially when the documented Rust, Python or Node.js bindings fit the implementation.

Who it is for

  • NLP and language-model researchers preparing text for experiments
  • Developers integrating tokenization into Python, Node.js or Rust software
  • Production teams that need a separable text-encoding component

Documented uses

  • Encode text into token IDs and accompanying encoding fields
  • Tokenize text into token strings
  • Decode token IDs back into text or tokens
  • Read and convert tokenizer JSON files
  • Use tokenization models and pipeline stages such as normalization, pre-tokenization, post-processing and decoding

Requirements & limits

The repository identifies the project as open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The README documents Python installation with `pip install --pre tokenizers` for the release candidate.

  • Rust is the reference implementation; Python and Node.js bindings are listed as available.
  • The README describes v1.0.0 as a release candidate and notes that the current library does not ship all features.
  • C and C++ bindings are listed as planned, and Java and Go bindings as future work; Ruby is identified as an external community project.
  • The documented tokenizer models include BPE, Unigram, WordPiece and WordLevel.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Encode text with the Python binding

Install the documented Python release candidate, load a tokenizer, and encode a text string.

Before you start

  • Python environment with pip
  • A pretrained tokenizer identifier or a local tokenizer file

Steps

  1. Install the documented prerelease with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install --pre tokenizers
  2. Import Tokenizer from tokenizers.

  3. Load a tokenizer with Tokenizer.from_pretrained("meta-llama/Llama-3.1-8B") or use Tokenizer.from_file(path) for a local file.

  4. Pass text to tokenizer.encode(...) to obtain an encoding with IDs, type IDs and an attention mask.

Expected outcome

A Python encoding object containing token IDs and associated fields for the input text.

Guide limitations

  • The README identifies the release as a v1.0.0 release candidate and says the current library does not ship all features.
  • The example shows loading a pretrained tokenizer or local file; it does not document model inference.
