Practical overview
When it fits
Use it before giving an AI tool codebase context when a single file is more convenient than sharing repository files individually.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to prepare repository contents for an AI-assisted coding or analysis task.
- Users who need to control which files are included or how the generated context is formatted.
Documented uses
- Package repository files into one artifact for manual use with an AI tool.
- Exclude additional file patterns, select an output path, add line numbers, or choose plain-text or XML output.
Requirements & limits
The README documents installation with pip and use from the command line. The repository is public and licensed under MIT.
- The project creates a context artifact; the user supplies that file to an AI tool separately.
- The README lists configurable output paths, extra ignore patterns, configuration files, line numbers and plain or XML styles.
- The README gives two different default output filenames.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Repopack Py and create a repository export
Prepare one text file from a repository for use as context with an AI tool.
Before you start
- Python package installation using pip
- A repository path to pass to the command
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install repopackRun
repopack path/to/your/repository.Find the generated file in the current directory.
Expected outcome
A packed repository file is generated for later use with an LLM or another AI tool.
Guide limitations
- The README gives different default output filenames in its usage description and output-option list.
- The documented workflow creates the context file; it does not submit the file to an AI service.
