Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a software task benefits from staged research, planning, approval and iteration, or when an engineering team wants to turn a recurring process into a configurable multi-agent mode.
Who it is for
- Developers planning new software from an idea or specification
- Teams refining an existing repository before implementation
- Builders creating repeatable multi-agent engineering pipelines
Documented uses
- Research and structure a software idea into an implementation plan
- Review an existing project and focus planning on a change area
- Create or update reusable factory modes
- Model pipeline workflows with coordinated agent, function, gate, fork and join stages
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under MIT. The documented quick start requires Python 3.11+, uv and Claude Code installed and authenticated. State is stored locally in project and global factory directories.
- The framework is CLI-oriented and requires a Python and Claude Code setup.
- Design mode supports ideas, Markdown specification files and existing repository paths.
- Create mode can generate a new workflow definition, SKILL.md playbook, CLI wiring and tests.
- Design-v2 adds parallel research, strategy and QA stages with user gates and an intent ledger.
- The documented example for an existing repository focuses on adding WebSocket support; broader repository capabilities are not established.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up re:factory for design workflows
Install the CLI and prepare the documented prerequisites for designing a software project or refining an existing repository.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- uv installed
- Claude Code installed and authenticated
Steps
Install re:factory as a uv tool from the project repository.
Use design mode with a quoted idea or a path to an existing project.
For a longer concept, provide a Markdown specification file; for an existing project, add a documented focus area such as an authentication layer or issue reference.
Expected outcome
The CLI is installed and a design workflow can be started from an idea, specification file or existing project path.
Guide limitations
- These steps document installation and workflow inputs; they do not establish that a particular project build or generated implementation will succeed.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
