Practical overview
When it fits
Use Reins when an application already has functions or ORM models that you want an LLM to operate through a plain-language interface, especially when separating read-only queries from gated writes is important.
Who it is for
- Developers adding natural-language operations to an existing Python application.
- Teams exposing selected SQLAlchemy or Django model operations to an agent.
- Developers building multi-step workflows that should call application functions rather than operate directly on raw database tables.
Documented uses
- Let users ask questions over application data through read-only agent calls.
- Allow an agent to select and sequence existing functions to complete an operational goal.
- Generate capabilities from SQLAlchemy or Django models without hand-writing each function wrapper.
- Inspect a database’s reflected capability surface and its read/write classifications from the CLI.
Requirements & limits
The README requires Python 3.11 or later and documents source installation while noting that the first published package release is forthcoming. Hosted model providers use provider credentials; Ollama is documented as requiring no API key. The repository displays an MIT license.
- Reins exposes intent-named functions or generated ORM capabilities, rather than making raw tables the primary agent interface.
- The documented entry points distinguish read-only ask() from write-capable run(); writes are opt-in and gated.
- The README lists SQLAlchemy and Django model integrations, plus function-based capability registration.
- Provider options include hosted services and local/server-backed options such as Ollama and vLLM.
- The README describes the project as alpha and provides source installation instructions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Reins from source with a model provider
Prepare the Python package and provider environment for using Reins from source.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- Git and pip
- An API key for a supported provider, such as Anthropic, or a local Ollama setup
Steps
Clone the Reins repository.
Install the package from source with the documented editable-install command and provider extras.
Set the relevant provider environment variable, or configure the documented local Ollama model.
Expected outcome
The source package and a model-provider configuration are prepared for Reins use.
Guide limitations
- This covers installation and provider configuration only; it does not establish that an agent workflow has run successfully.
- The README labels the project alpha and says the first published package release is forthcoming.
