Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when coding-agent sessions need to retain project-specific debugging history and decisions instead of starting without that context.
Who it is for
- Developers using AI coding agents on projects with recurring debugging or decisions.
- Teams and individual developers who want project-specific agent memory stored locally.
- Builders integrating an MCP-compatible coding agent with persistent project history.
Documented uses
- Recall earlier issues, attempted approaches, fixes and project decisions across sessions.
- Record new project events as coding work proceeds.
- Check a file’s history before editing to surface prior failed approaches.
- Visualize solved cases and the approaches recorded along the way.
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under the MIT license. Installation is documented through the Python package, and memory is stored locally in the project repository.
- Projectmem is a developer tool and MCP server, not an AI model or a hosted memory service.
- The documented clients include Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Antigravity and Codex; compatibility with every MCP client is not confirmed.
- The README describes local storage and says an update check is the only possible network call, when enabled.
- The documented workflow includes client configuration and a restart for the MCP server to load.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Projectmem for one coding project
Install Projectmem, initialize a project and connect a supported coding-agent client to its MCP server.
Before you start
- Python package installation using pip
- A project directory
- A supported MCP client and permission to edit its configuration
Steps
Install or update the package with the command below.
pip install -U projectmemFrom the project directory, run
pjm init.Configure the MCP server for the coding-agent client using the client-specific instructions in the README.
Restart the client so the MCP server loads; begin a session by asking the agent to load Projectmem instructions, summary and project map.
Expected outcome
The client can access the project's Projectmem history and use its tools to read and record project events.
Guide limitations
- The configuration varies by client; follow its specific instructions.
- The documented session prompt is recommended for more consistent capture, but is optional.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Projectmem | Recall earlier issues, attempted approaches, fixes and project decisions across sessions. | CLI, Self-hosted | The project is open source under the MIT license. Installation is documented through the Python package, and memory is stored locally in the project repository. |
| Continuum — pouyahasanamreji | Store project lessons so coding agents can retrieve them across conversations. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository documents local Docker Compose and bare-metal development setups. Bare-metal startup requires Node 22.12.0 or later and pnpm 10.33 or later; the Compose path skips these host prerequisites. |
| Haft | Record the problem a project is solving and the options considered. | CLI, Self-hosted |
