Haft

Haft is a local governance layer for AI coding agents that stores project problems, compared options, human decisions, supporting evidence and stale information as durable, typed project records.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Haft when consequential engineering reasoning should persist beyond an agent conversation as structured project memory, or when setting up a documented Claude Code or Codex integration.

Who it is for

  • Engineering teams using Claude Code or Codex that want project decisions and their evidence available as durable agent context.
  • Developers who want to initialize a project ledger without configuring a host integration.

Documented uses

  • Record the problem a project is solving and the options considered.
  • Preserve human decisions and the evidence supporting them for later engineering work.
  • Identify project evidence that has become stale.
  • Configure project-local skills and MCP integration for a supported coding-agent host.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • Claude Code and Codex are the stable supported hosts; several other listed adapters are experimental or legacy.
  • Claude Code and Codex setup can place skills globally or in the project using the documented --local option.
  • Bare haft init requires terminal input and output for its interactive host selection; automation must specify intent explicitly.
  • The project core and ledger can be initialized without host carriers using haft init --core-only.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Initialize Haft for a Claude Code project

Set up Haft’s documented Claude Code integration in a project.

Before you start

  • The Haft command-line binary.
  • A project directory.
  • Claude Code as the selected host.

Steps

  1. In a new project, run haft init --claude to configure Claude MCP, skills and the managed section in CLAUDE.md.

  2. To keep skills in the repository, use haft init --claude --local instead.

  3. For an existing initialized project after installing a new binary, fully restart or reconnect the coding-agent host.

Expected outcome

Haft’s Claude integration is initialized, with skills placed globally or in the project according to the selected command.

Guide limitations

  • Claude Code is listed as a stable supported host; other adapters have different support status.
  • The documented restart/reconnect instruction applies when updating an already initialized project.
Source-based practical guide

Initialize Haft for Codex

Set up the documented Codex MCP, skills and project-instruction integration.

Before you start

  • The Haft command-line binary.
  • A project directory.
  • Codex as the selected host.

Steps

  1. Run haft init --codex for Codex MCP, skills and a managed section in AGENTS.md.

  2. Use haft init --codex --local to put skills in the project’s .agents/skills directory.

  3. For an existing initialized project after installing a new binary, fully restart or reconnect the coding-agent host.

Expected outcome

Haft’s Codex integration is initialized, with skills in the documented global or project-local location.

Guide limitations

  • Codex is listed as a stable supported host.
  • The README says not to use haft init as routine database maintenance.
COMPARE OPTIONS

Compare options for AI coding assistance

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
