Contextatlas

Contextatlas is an open-source codebase retrieval and project-memory tool for AI coding agents. It indexes repositories with Tree-sitter chunking, combines LanceDB vector search with SQLite FTS5 full-text search, and packs retrieved context to fit token limits. It can be used through a CLI, MCP server or embeddable library.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Contextatlas when a coding agent needs searchable repository context and reusable project knowledge, or when a developer wants to expose those capabilities through a CLI or MCP client.

Who it is for

  • Developers building repository-aware AI coding workflows.
  • Teams using MCP-compatible clients that need code retrieval and memory tools.
  • Builders integrating retrieval into custom agent applications or scripts.

Documented uses

  • Index a repository and find relevant implementation details using a natural-language question.
  • Expand retrieved code with neighboring context and pack it within a token budget.
  • Record project features, decisions and profiles for reuse across coding sessions.
  • Expose code retrieval and memory tools to an MCP client.
  • Inspect retrieval, index and memory health through documented observability tools.

Requirements & limits

The project is open source under the MIT license. Its documented requirements include Node.js 20 or later and embedding and reranking API credentials and settings.

  • Embedding and reranking services must be configured with API keys, base URLs and model names.
  • The CLI supports local repository indexing and retrieval; MCP is a separate integration mode for compatible clients.
  • The project supplies context and memory, not agent reasoning, workflow orchestration or business API execution.
  • The stack includes TypeScript, Tree-sitter, LanceDB, SQLite FTS5 and the Model Context Protocol SDK.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Index a repository and search its code

Set up Contextatlas, index a repository and retrieve code relevant to a natural-language question.

Before you start

  • Node.js 20 or later.
  • Embedding and reranking API keys, base URLs and model names configured in the Contextatlas environment file.

Steps

  1. Install the package globally with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install -g @codefromkarl/context-atlas
  2. Run contextatlas init and fill in the embedding and reranking settings in ~/.contextatlas/.env.

  3. Index the target repository with contextatlas index /path/to/repo.

  4. Search it with contextatlas search --repo-path /path/to/repo --information-request "How is the authentication flow implemented?".

Expected outcome

Contextatlas returns retrieved code context for the repository question.

Guide limitations

  • The documented workflow requires embedding and reranking service settings; the example environment file includes default SiliconFlow endpoints.
  • The search recipe does not establish that results are correct for a particular repository or question.

Prepare an MCP client integration

Configure Contextatlas for MCP use and expose its MCP server to a compatible client.

Before you start

  • Node.js 20 or later.
  • Embedding and reranking API keys, base URLs and model names configured in Contextatlas.
  • An MCP-compatible client.

Steps

  1. Install the package globally with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install -g @codefromkarl/context-atlas
  2. Initialize configuration with contextatlas init and enter the required embedding and reranking settings.

  3. Select MCP mode with contextatlas setup:local --mode mcp.

  4. Start the server with contextatlas mcp; the project also documents a client configuration using command contextatlas and argument mcp.

Expected outcome

Contextatlas exposes retrieval and memory tools through an MCP server for a compatible client.

Guide limitations

  • Client configuration depends on the MCP client; the project documentation gives Claude Desktop as an example.
  • The retrieval-only toolset is available when configured with --toolset retrieval-only; integration details vary by client.
