Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a small, five-color sprite is the intended output, especially for quick pixel-art prototyping. The fixed canvas and palette are central constraints, not post-processing options.
Who it is for
- Pixel-art makers developing small sprite concepts from text prompts.
- Developers or artists who want to experiment with a locally run, constrained image-generation model.
Documented uses
- Generate a 24×24 sprite from a short, concrete text prompt.
- Create variations by changing the palette, temperature or seed.
- Arrange and edit generated sprites in a canvas, then export them.
- Use local generation endpoints for direct requests or streamed partial images.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents local installation with Python 3.10 or newer and Git LFS. It describes inference as offline after Python packages are installed.
- Every generated image is 24×24 and uses five palette colors.
- The model uses 576 sequential generation steps; CPU inference can be noticeably slower than CUDA or Apple Silicon.
- The included canvas supports sprite arrangement and export, in addition to generation.
- The README documents FastAPI generation routes, including a streaming route that returns partial images as NDJSON.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and open Pixelgpt 24X24 locally
Set up the repository and start its local canvas app.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or newer
- Git LFS installed before cloning
- A shell; Windows users can use the documented PowerShell environment-activation command
Steps
Run the command below, then clone
https://github.com/unstonio/pixelgpt-24x24.gitand change into the repository directory.git lfs installCreate a virtual environment with the command below and activate it; on Windows, use
.venv\Scripts\activate.python3 -m venv .venvUpgrade pip and install dependencies with the command below and the command below.
python3 -m pip install --upgrade pippython3 -m pip install -r requirements.txtStart the app with the command below, then open
http://127.0.0.1:8000.python3 app.py
Expected outcome
The local canvas app is available at the documented loopback address.
Guide limitations
- The repository is about 222 MB because it includes model checkpoints.
- This setup guide covers starting the app; generation performance depends on the selected or available device.
Generate and refine a pixel-art sprite in the canvas
Create a palette-constrained sprite from a concrete text prompt and prepare it for export.
Before you start
- The local app is running
- A short, concrete text prompt
Steps
Enter a prompt such as
tiny red lighthouse at night.Choose a five-color palette or randomize it, then select Generate.
Adjust Temp lower for more predictable results or higher for more variation; use a seed to reproduce a result with the same prompt, palette and settings.
Move, resize, duplicate, layer or group the generated sprite, then export it.
Expected outcome
A generated 24×24 sprite can be adjusted in the canvas and exported.
Guide limitations
- The model produces only 24×24 images with five colors.
- Text understanding is modest; concrete object prompts work best.
- CPU inference can be noticeably slower because generation uses 576 sequential steps.
