Openharness

Openharness is an MIT-licensed Dart desktop command center that runs and coordinates multiple coding-agent sessions across connected machines. It uses real terminal and tmux panes, machine daemons, worktrees and encrypted machine-to-machine connections to bring local and remote development environments into one workspace.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Openharness when agent sessions, machines or development disciplines need to be viewed and coordinated from one desktop workspace rather than handled in separate terminals.

Who it is for

  • Developers working with more than one coding agent.
  • Teams or individuals coordinating agent sessions across laptops, servers and GPU machines.
  • Builders exploring agent-assisted CAD, electronics, robotics, games or music workflows.

Documented uses

  • Run named coding agents side by side in separate terminal sessions.
  • Coordinate agent work across a laptop, home server or GPU machine.
  • Keep agent work separated with a worktree per harness.
  • Use local model tooling named by the project, including Ollama, MLX-LM, Grid and vLLM.
  • Group related harnesses into swarms and, when enabled, let agents consult peers.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented desktop download is for macOS or Linux. The project also documents a command-line installation and machine-linking flow.

  • Agent coverage: the README names Claude Code, Codex, Hermes, Cursor, OpenCode, Devin, Amp and Copilot among supported environments.
  • Machine topology: each machine runs a daemon, with direct WebRTC, Cloudflare TURN or relay paths described for connections.
  • Terminal model: agents run in real tmux panes, and Openharness reads transcripts and uses vendor hooks rather than wrapping the agent.
  • Isolation: the project describes a worktree per harness so an agent can work on its own branch.
  • Security model: the README describes ChaCha20-Poly1305, X25519 session keys and pinned Ed25519 identities, with the relay forwarding ciphertext.

Source-based practical guide

Link a development machine to Openharness

Add a machine so Openharness can coordinate agents running there.

Before you start

  • The Openharness desktop app for macOS or Linux.
  • A machine on which the project installer, sign-in and daemon commands can run.
  • A password set for remote access.

Steps

  1. Download the desktop app.

  2. On the machine to add, run the project installer.

  3. Run harness login, then harness remote-password set and harness start.

  4. In the app, choose Machines → Link Machine.

Expected outcome

The machine is linked to the Openharness workspace for running agents through its daemon.

Guide limitations

  • The documented instructions describe setup and linking, not a particular project workflow or successful execution.
COMPARE OPTIONS

Compare options for Agent orchestration

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
