Practical overview
When it fits
Choose Opengap when Git-based versioning and a framework-independent repository structure are central requirements for agent development. It is especially relevant when agent identity, capabilities, workflows, memory and policy artifacts need to live together.
Who it is for
- Developers building repository-based AI agents
- Teams versioning agent behavior and supporting files with Git
- Tool builders consuming or distributing standardized agent definitions
- Organizations modeling roles, handoffs and segregation-of-duties policies in agent repositories
Documented uses
- Define an AI agent with a manifest and identity file
- Version prompts, skills, tools and policies through Git
- Compose agents from reusable skills and nested agent definitions
- Package or distribute agent configurations through a CLI workflow
- Create tooling around a framework-agnostic agent standard
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly accessible on GitHub, is open source under the MIT license, and documents Node.js 18 or newer for the CLI.
- The minimum structure requires agent.yaml and SOUL.md; other directories are optional.
- The CLI is published as @open-gitagent/opengap, while gitagent remains a backward-compatible command alias.
- The standard is described as framework-agnostic, but a specific adapter or framework integration is not demonstrated in the available material.
- The repository structure supports documented patterns including Git versioning, human review, role separation, shared context and persistent memory.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create a minimal OpenGAP agent definition
Set up the two required files for a repository-based OpenGAP agent.
Before you start
- A Git repository
- Node.js 18 or newer is listed by the project
- The @open-gitagent/opengap package and its CLI are the documented distribution
Steps
Create or use a Git repository for the agent.
Add an agent.yaml manifest containing the agent definition.
Add SOUL.md containing the agent identity, personality, communication style and values.
Add optional directories such as skills, tools, workflows, knowledge or agents as the definition grows.
Expected outcome
A repository containing the documented minimum OpenGAP structure: agent.yaml and SOUL.md.
Guide limitations
- The supplied material documents the definition structure but does not document a complete execution or deployment command.
- Specific framework adapters are not demonstrated.
