Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when coding-agent sessions need a persistent, searchable project context rather than isolated conversations.
Who it is for
- Developers using Claude Code, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI
- Teams or individuals organizing durable project and development context
- Builders creating a long-lived memory workspace for coding agents
Documented uses
- Carry project goals, decisions and work context between coding-agent sessions
- Turn meeting or incident notes into linked knowledge records
- Surface active projects, recent changes, tasks and relevant memories at session start
- Organize agent notes and development context inside an Obsidian vault
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented setup uses a local Obsidian vault and local CLI agents; Obsidian 1.12+ and Node 22+ are shown as supported requirements.
- Claude Code has full support, while Codex CLI and Gemini CLI are documented with hooks and commands.
- QMD adds semantic search and MCP tools; without it, the vault falls back to grep and the Obsidian CLI.
- Installation can use the ShardMind wizard, direct Git cloning or a GitHub template.
- The workflow depends on an Obsidian vault and local command-line agent setup.
- The repository is a template and memory workspace, not an independent coding-agent model.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the Obsidian Mind vault
Create and prepare an Obsidian vault for a supported coding agent.
Before you start
- Node 22+
- Obsidian 1.12+
- A supported agent: Claude Code, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI
- A fresh directory for ShardMind installation, or Git for direct cloning
Steps
Install through ShardMind in a fresh directory, or clone the Obsidian Mind repository directly.
Open the installed or cloned folder as an Obsidian vault.
Enable the Obsidian CLI in Obsidian Settings → General.
Run Claude, Codex or Gemini from the vault directory and complete the initial vault context, including brain/North Star.md when using the direct-clone path.
Expected outcome
A prepared Obsidian vault containing the Obsidian Mind template for supported coding-agent workflows.
Guide limitations
- This recipe documents setup and initialization; it does not establish that an agent session or retrieval workflow has been executed.
- QMD is optional and is not required for the fallback grep and Obsidian CLI retrieval path.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Mind | Carry project goals, decisions and work context between coding-agent sessions | CLI, Desktop, Self-hosted | The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented setup uses a local Obsidian vault and local CLI agents; Obsidian 1.12+ and Node 22+ are shown as supported requirements. |
| Continuum — pouyahasanamreji | Store project lessons so coding agents can retrieve them across conversations. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository documents local Docker Compose and bare-metal development setups. Bare-metal startup requires Node 22.12.0 or later and pnpm 10.33 or later; the Compose path skips these host prerequisites. |
| Haft | Record the problem a project is solving and the options considered. | CLI, Self-hosted |
