Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you have a test command and want evidence about whether your tests detect changes to a selected source file.

Who it is for

  • Developers evaluating whether existing tests catch changes in selected source files.
  • Teams looking to add mutation testing to a command-line test workflow.

Documented uses

  • Generate code mutations for a chosen source file.
  • Run an existing test command against those mutations.
  • Review surviving and detected mutants and an overall mutation-coverage result.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public, identifies Mutahunter as open source and specifies the AGPL-3.0 license. The documented setup requires Python 3.11 or later and an OpenAI API key.

  • You must supply the project-specific test command and source and test file paths.
  • The documented invocation specifies a model and sets an OpenAI API key.
  • The README describes the tool as language-agnostic and includes a Java Maven example.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run mutation testing on a selected source file

Use Mutahunter with a test command, source file, test file and model to assess whether tests detect generated code mutations.

Before you start

  • Python 3.11 or later
  • An OpenAI API key
  • A project test command and source and test file paths

Steps

  1. Install Mutahunter with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install https://github.com/codeintegrity-ai/mutahunter
  2. Set the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable.

  3. Run mutahunter run with --test-command, --model, --source-path and --test-path set for your project.

Expected outcome

Mutahunter reports mutation coverage and counts of mutants that survived, were killed, timed out or had compile errors.

Guide limitations

  • The documented example uses an OpenAI model and Java Maven test command; the repository describes the tool as language-agnostic and provides a Java example.
