Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Unity project needs language-model-powered character interaction or dialogue, with model setup and response handling inside the game project.
Who it is for
- Unity game developers building conversational non-player characters or in-game dialogue.
- Teams prototyping interactive characters and using semantic search to inform character knowledge.
Documented uses
- Set up a language model in a Unity project using a downloaded default model or a .gguf model.
- Create a character, define its role with a system prompt, and handle replies from C# code.
- Search project data semantically through the included retrieval-augmented generation system.
Requirements & limits
The public repository identifies the project as Apache-2.0 licensed. Its README describes use as free for personal and commercial purposes. It documents installation through the Unity Asset Store or Package Manager using the Git repository URL.
- The README describes LlamaLib as the backend, built on llama.cpp; it also mentions local operation and remote-server setups.
- The package includes a RAG system for semantic search across data, which can be used to enhance character knowledge.
- Model setup requires downloading a default model or loading a .gguf file; default downloads are described as several gigabytes.
- For mobile, the README recommends models up to 1–2 billion parameters. Android setup requires IL2CPP and ARM64; iOS uses default player settings.
- The README lists Unity 2021 LTS, 2022 LTS, 2023 and Unity 6 as tested versions; this describes the project documentation, not a compatibility guarantee.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up an LLM character in Unity
Add model and character components to a Unity project and connect them to a chat call.
Before you start
- A Unity project
- LLMUnity package, installed through the Unity Asset Store or Package Manager using the Git repository URL
- A default model downloaded through the LLM component or a .gguf model
Steps
Install the package through the Asset Store and Unity Package Manager, or add the repository Git URL through Package Manager.
Create a GameObject and add the LLM script; download a default model or load a .gguf model.
Create a character GameObject, add the LLMAgent script, and set the character role in System Prompt.
Reference the LLMAgent from a project script and call Chat with a prompt, handling streamed or complete replies.
Expected outcome
A Unity character can respond to a chat prompt through the LLMAgent interface.
Guide limitations
- Default model downloads are described as several gigabytes.
- The README lists tested Unity versions as 2021 LTS, 2022 LTS, 2023 and Unity 6; this is not a compatibility guarantee.
