Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when the task involves developing, inspecting or contributing to Linera at the protocol or Rust/Wasm application layer, rather than simply consuming a hosted blockchain application.
Who it is for
- Rust developers building Linera applications for WebAssembly.
- Protocol engineers studying or contributing to blockchain components.
- Developers using the Linera CLI and a local test network for chain and transfer workflows.
Documented uses
- Study the organization of the Linera protocol implementation.
- Develop Rust applications targeting the Linera Wasm virtual machine.
- Build and work with Linera client, proxy and server services.
- Start a local faucet-backed test network and perform documented wallet, chain and transfer operations.
- Contribute changes through the repository’s open-source development workflow.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. The documented development workflow requires the software requirements in INSTALL.md and locally built Rust binaries.
- Rust is the primary implementation language.
- The repository includes Wasm application tooling through linera-sdk and example Rust applications.
- The codebase separates execution, chain, storage, core, RPC, client and service responsibilities.
- Docker and Rust build workflows are represented in the repository.
- The quickstart documents a local test network with a faucet, wallet initialization, chain requests, balance queries and transfers.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a local Linera test network
Prepare the Linera CLI, start a local faucet-backed test network and initialize a wallet for chain and balance workflows.
Before you start
- A checkout of the Linera Protocol repository.
- Software requirements listed in INSTALL.md.
- Rust-built Linera binaries available on PATH.
- A shell environment supporting the documented commands.
Steps
Build the Linera storage-service and service binaries, then add the debug target directory to PATH.
Import the documented linera_spawn helper and start a local network with a faucet on port 8080.
Set LINERA_TMP_DIR, FAUCET_URL and the wallet, keystore and storage paths.
Initialize a wallet with the faucet and request two chains.
Use the documented wallet and balance commands to inspect the chains and continue with transfer operations.
Expected outcome
A local Linera test network is started and a wallet is configured with requested chains for the documented CLI workflow.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers the repository’s local test-network quickstart; it does not establish production deployment behavior or network compatibility.
- The repository points to INSTALL.md for software requirements, but the supplied material does not reproduce that file’s full contents.
