Practical overview
When it fits
Consider this repository when examining an existing Internet Computer–Solana integration or following its documented local setup. For new work, account for the README's deprecation notice and its recommendation to migrate to dfinity/sol-rpc-canister.
Who it is for
- Internet Computer developers building applications that need Solana data or RPC access.
- Developers integrating Solana wallet address generation and threshold-Schnorr signing into ICP canisters.
- Teams reviewing or maintaining an existing IC-Solana integration.
Documented uses
- Retrieve Solana data such as block details, account information and node statistics from an Internet Computer canister.
- Configure Solana RPC providers and submit messages or raw transactions through the RPC canister.
- Generate Solana Ed25519 public keys and sign messages or transactions using the wallet canister.
- Develop and locally deploy the documented RPC and wallet canisters.
Requirements & limits
- The README identifies an RPC canister, a wallet canister and a Rust integration library as distinct components.
- RPC communication uses Internet Computer HTTPS outcalls to Solana JSON-RPC providers, with provider registration and configuration described in the README.
- The wallet canister uses threshold Schnorr for message and transaction signing.
- The local setup requires Rust and the DFINITY SDK; Docker and PocketIC are listed as optional for specific purposes.
- The README explicitly marks the repository deprecated and names dfinity/sol-rpc-canister as the actively maintained replacement.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Deploy the RPC and wallet canisters locally
Set up the documented IC-Solana canisters on a local Internet Computer replica.
Before you start
- Rust
- DFINITY SDK
- Docker is optional for reproducible builds.
- PocketIC is optional for testing.
Steps
Add the solana_rpc and solana_wallet custom canister entries, with their Candid and WASM paths, to dfx.json.
Start a local replica with dfx start --clean --host 127.0.0.1:4943.
Deploy the RPC canister with dfx deploy solana_rpc --argument '(record {})'.
Deploy the wallet canister using the README's dfx deploy solana_wallet command, passing the RPC canister ID and a null schnorr_key.
Expected outcome
The README says the canisters are deployed to the local network and describes accessing the application through localhost:4943 with its asset canister ID.
Guide limitations
- The repository README says the project is deprecated and recommends migration to dfinity/sol-rpc-canister.
- The supplied deployment instructions cover local deployment; they do not establish a production deployment procedure.
Call the Solana RPC health check
Use the deployed RPC canister to request Solana cluster health through a documented provider selection.
Before you start
- A locally deployed solana_rpc canister.
- DFINITY SDK and a configured dfx identity wallet.
Steps
Choose a documented cluster option: Mainnet, Devnet, a custom RPC URL, multiple custom RPC entries, or a predefined provider such as mainnet, devnet or testnet.
Run the corresponding sol_getHealth canister call shown in the README, supplying the selected option and dfx identity wallet.
Expected outcome
The example invokes sol_getHealth through the RPC canister using the selected Solana network or provider.
Guide limitations
- The README provides example calls, not a result interpretation or troubleshooting procedure.
- The project is marked deprecated in its README.
