Practical overview

When it fits

Use Hexabot when you need a self-hosted application for developing and running workflow-based conversational assistants, and want workflow definitions, actions and channel concepts in one runtime.

Who it is for

  • Teams building conversational assistants whose behavior is organized into workflows and actions.
  • Developers who want to configure and run a self-hosted workflow application through a CLI.
  • Builders connecting reusable capabilities, runtime memory or MCP tool and context integration points to conversational workflows.

Documented uses

  • Define agentic workflow logic in YAML and execute it through schema-validated actions.
  • Separate reusable capability and configuration bindings from task logic.
  • Set up a local project with an admin UI and API for workflow development.
  • Design channel-connected assistants that use runtime memory, MCP integration points or RAG.

Requirements & limits

The documented quick start runs a local project and prompts for initial admin credentials during creation. The repository identifies the project as open source under FCL-1.0-ALv2.

  • The CLI quick start requires Node.js ^24.17.0 and one of npm, pnpm, yarn or bun; Docker is optional for Docker-based services.
  • Creating a project requires an interactive terminal and initial admin credentials.
  • SQLite is the default local database option; Postgres is documented for production setups.
  • The local project exposes an admin UI and API; API documentation is listed for non-production use.
  • MCP is described as integration points for tool and context interoperability, not as a claim of compatibility with every tool.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Create and start a local Hexabot project

Set up a CLI-generated project and start its development runtime.

Before you start

  • Node.js ^24.17.0
  • npm, pnpm, yarn or bun
  • An interactive terminal for project creation
  • Docker only if using Docker-based services

Steps

  1. Install the CLI globally with the command below, or use its npx form.

    Documented command
    npm install -g @hexabot-ai/cli
  2. Run hexabot create my-project and provide the initial admin credentials when prompted.

  3. Change into the project directory and run hexabot dev.

  4. Open the admin UI at http://localhost:3000; the local API is at http://localhost:3000/api.

Expected outcome

A running local project with an admin UI and API; non-production API documentation is listed at `http://localhost:3000/docs`.

Guide limitations

  • Project creation requires an interactive terminal; the documentation directs CI or other non-interactive users to create the project locally first.
  • This quick start covers development setup, not production deployment.
