Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when production monitoring needs to connect with diagnosis, notification, incident history and repeatable healing workflows on infrastructure managed by the operating team.
Who it is for
- SRE and DevOps teams managing production infrastructure
- Operators automating recurring incident-response workflows
- Teams that need searchable local incident history and configurable notifications
Documented uses
- Detect production infrastructure incidents
- Diagnose failures and produce incident reports
- Trigger configured remediation and notification workflows
- Search, review and export incident history
- Identify recurring or flapping incidents
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. The standalone watchdog requires an Anthropic API key.
- Standalone mode does not require a Hermes installation.
- The documented implementation is Python-based and targets Linux, cloud, self-hosted and server environments.
- Notification options include Discord, Slack, PagerDuty, Microsoft Teams and a generic webhook.
- Quiet hours suppress outbound notifications while incidents continue to be detected and indexed.
- SQLite full-text search, dashboard filters and CSV/JSON exports support incident review.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the standalone watchdog
Prepare the documented standalone watchdog for Linux-based incident monitoring.
Before you start
- A real Linux host.
- An Anthropic API key.
- The Hermes Incident Commander repository.
Steps
Obtain the repository from GitHub.
Provide the Anthropic API key required by the standalone watchdog.
Use the documented watchdog installation path, including the systemd installer when a service installation is needed.
Validate the watchdog configuration with --validate-config before starting it.
Expected outcome
A configured standalone watchdog ready for the documented monitoring workflow.
Guide limitations
- The supplied documentation describes setup and configuration validation but does not provide a complete incident-execution procedure here.
- An Anthropic API key is required.
- Source-based guidance is not a runtime verification.
