Practical overview
When it fits
Use Firo when the task involves running, building or studying a privacy-oriented cryptocurrency network and its blockchain software. The repository is especially relevant when Docker-based daemon operation, source compilation or cryptographic privacy mechanisms are part of the work.
Who it is for
- People evaluating privacy-focused cryptocurrency software
- Developers working with C++ blockchain clients and cryptographic privacy mechanisms
- Operators who want to run a Firo daemon through Docker or a locally built client
- Researchers exploring Lelantus- and Sigma-related privacy technology
Documented uses
- Run a Firo daemon and query blockchain or peer information
- Build Firo command-line and GUI components from source
- Develop or research privacy-focused cryptocurrency and blockchain systems
- Inspect a proof-of-work and peer-to-peer blockchain implementation
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, active and MIT-licensed. Documented platform coverage includes Windows, Linux and macOS; the supplied build instructions provide Linux and macOS details, while Docker is documented for daemon and command-line use without the GUI.
- Docker operation is command-line and RPC-only because the repository says its GUI is not supported in Docker.
- Source builds can produce headless command-line binaries or include the GUI wallet.
- The project uses C++ and provides dependency-building scripts plus platform-specific build notes.
- The described privacy design includes Spark, Lelantus- and Sigma-related technology, and Dandelion++.
- The network combines proof of work with LLMQ Chainlocks and uses FiroPOW, a ProgPOW variant.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run Firo as a Docker daemon and query it
Start the documented Firo Docker daemon, inspect its blockchain and peers, and back up its wallet file.
Before you start
- Docker
- A local .firo directory for the Docker volume
Steps
Build the local image with the command below, or pull the documented
firoorg/firodimage.docker build . -t firo-localStart a detached container with the
.firodirectory mounted at/home/firod/.firo.Use the command below to view the current block count and the command below to view connected nodes.
docker exec firod firo-cli getblockcountdocker exec firod firo-cli getpeerinfoStop and restart the daemon with the command below and the command below as needed.
docker stop firoddocker start firodBack up the wallet with the command below.
docker cp firod:/home/firod/.firo/wallet.dat .
Expected outcome
A running Firo daemon that can be queried with `firo-cli`, with a documented wallet-backup step.
Guide limitations
- The repository states that the GUI is not supported when running with Docker.
- The daemon may need time to find nodes and download blocks before the block count is available.
- The instructions require Docker and do not document a GUI workflow for this method.
Build Firo from source with an optional GUI
Configure and compile Firo from a cloned repository, choosing headless or GUI output and optionally running unit tests.
Before you start
- A cloned Firo repository
- The documented compiler and build dependencies for the target system
- Homebrew for the documented macOS prerequisites
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Build the dependencies from the
dependsdirectory.Configure CMake with
BUILD_GUI=OFFfor a headless build orBUILD_GUI=ONto include the GUI wallet, withBUILD_CLI=ON.Run the build from the
builddirectory; optionally configureBUILD_TESTS=ONand run the command below.make testUse the generated binaries in
build/bin/.
Expected outcome
A source-built Firo command-line client and daemon, with `firo-qt` also generated when GUI support is enabled.
Guide limitations
- The documented dependency lists and commands vary by operating system.
- The build instructions do not document installation or deployment beyond generated binaries.
