Ethlint

Ethlint is a JavaScript command-line linter that analyzes Solidity source code for style and security issues and can automatically fix issues it can resolve. It supports project-level rule, plugin, and shared-configuration settings, plus file- and directory-based linting.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Ethlint when adding command-line style and security checks to a Solidity development workflow, or when you need project-specific lint configuration and partial automatic fixes.

Who it is for

  • Solidity developers who want command-line style and security checks for smart-contract code.
  • Teams maintaining Solidity repositories that need configurable lint rules and ignore patterns.

Documented uses

  • Lint an individual Solidity file or a contracts directory.
  • Configure style and security rules, plugins, shared configurations, and ignored paths.
  • Apply automatic fixes to issues Ethlint can resolve.
  • Suppress selected lint rules for specific lines or files with comment directives.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project documents installation through npm and identifies the repository license as MIT.

  • The documented workflow uses the solium executable, including when the ethlint npm package is installed.
  • Linting supports an individual file or a directory, with an option to request automatic fixes.
  • Rule configuration can include plugins and shared configurations; comment directives can disable selected rules in code.
  • The project says its conventions do not strictly follow the Solidity Style Guide.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Ethlint configuration for a Solidity project

Create the project’s ignore and lint-configuration files, then set rules and plugins.

Before you start

  • A DApp or Solidity project directory
  • npm to install the ethlint package

Steps

  1. Install Ethlint with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install -g ethlint
  2. From the project root, run solium --init.

  3. Edit .soliumrc.json to configure rules, plugins, and shared configurations.

Expected outcome

The project has `.soliumignore` and `.soliumrc.json` files to guide linting.

Guide limitations

  • Initialization creates configuration files; linting or fixing code is a separate step.
Source-based practical guide

Lint Solidity files or a contracts directory and apply available fixes

Run configured checks against a selected Solidity file or directory and request automatic fixes.

Before you start

  • Ethlint installed and project lint configuration available
  • A Solidity file or contracts directory

Steps

  1. Run solium -f foobar.sol to lint a file, or solium -d contracts/ to lint a directory.

  2. To request automatic fixes for a directory, run solium -d contracts/ --fix.

Expected outcome

Ethlint reports lint issues and automatically fixes issues it can resolve when `--fix` is used.

Guide limitations

  • Automatic fixing only resolves issues the tool can fix.
  • Ethlint does not strictly adhere to the Solidity Style Guide.
