Ethjs Provider Signer

Ethjs Provider Signer is a JavaScript web3-standard provider wrapper that intercepts eth_sendTransaction requests, signs transaction data through a supplied callback, and forwards it as eth_sendRawTransaction to an Ethereum endpoint.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an ethjs application needs provider-based Ethereum communication with transaction signing delegated to a supplied callback.

Who it is for

  • Developers integrating Ethereum transaction signing into ethjs applications.
  • Teams connecting an ethjs application to an Ethereum JSON-RPC endpoint while supplying their own signer and account callbacks.

Documented uses

  • Sign transaction payloads before sending them to an Ethereum endpoint.
  • Provide account addresses to an ethjs provider.
  • Use an external signing package or a custom signing callback in an ethjs application.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and declares an MIT license. Installation is documented through npm.

  • The signing callback must return signed raw transaction data as hexadecimal.
  • An accounts callback supplies account addresses to the provider.
  • The README example uses ethjs-query and ethjs-signer; it also names ethereumjs-signer as a possible signer.
  • Nonce and gas price are populated through RPC calls by default, while values specified in the raw transaction take precedence.

Source-based practical guide

Configure a signing provider and submit an Ethereum transaction

Use ethjs-provider-signer with an Ethereum endpoint, signing callback, and account callback to submit a transaction through ethjs.

Before you start

  • A JavaScript project with npm.
  • An Ethereum JSON-RPC endpoint.
  • A transaction signing function and an accounts callback; the README demonstrates ethjs-signer and ethjs-query.

Steps

  1. Install the provider with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install --save ethjs-provider-signer
  2. Require ethjs-provider-signer, ethjs-signer, and ethjs-query in the application.

  3. Create a SignerProvider with the endpoint URL and callbacks: signTransaction should return the signed raw transaction through its callback, and accounts should return the account list.

  4. Create an Eth instance with that provider, then call eth.sendTransaction with transaction data including a from address and provide a callback.

Expected outcome

The provider signs `eth_sendTransaction` payloads, converts the request to `eth_sendRawTransaction`, and forwards it; the example shows a transaction hash in the result.

Guide limitations

  • The signing callback must return a signed transaction as a single alphanumeric hexadecimal payload.
  • The README’s example includes a private-key placeholder; use an appropriate signing function for the application.
  • Nonce and gas price are auto-filled by default using RPC calls, but values provided in the raw transaction override those defaults.
