Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when JavaScript code needs to translate between contract ABI definitions and encoded method or event data.
Who it is for
JavaScript developers building Ethereum applications or tooling that processes contract method and event data.
Documented uses
- Encode contract method inputs and decode method outputs.
- Encode event data and decode event data against an ABI definition.
- Generate a method signature from an ABI entry.
Requirements & limits
- The README demonstrates CommonJS import with require('ethjs-abi').
- The package is described by its README as experimental and not ready for production use.
- The repository specifies an MIT license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Encode and decode Ethereum contract methods and events
Use ethjs-abi with a contract ABI to encode method or event data and decode corresponding results.
Before you start
- JavaScript environment that can load ethjs-abi with require().
- Contract ABI entries for the methods or events to process.
- For decoding event data, the event data and associated topic value shown in the example.
Steps
Load the library with
const abi = require('ethjs-abi');and define the contract ABI entries.Encode a method call with
abi.encodeMethod(abiEntry, arguments); decode method output withabi.decodeMethod(abiEntry, encodedOutput).Encode event data with
abi.encodeEvent(eventEntry, arguments); decode event data withabi.decodeEvent(eventEntry, encodedData, topics). If needed, obtain a signature with
abi.encodeSignature(abiEntry), as shown for the event entry.
Expected outcome
The examples produce encoded hexadecimal method or event data and decoded Result values, including named fields for the demonstrated contract ABI.
Guide limitations
- The package is explicitly described as experimental and not ready for production use.
- Examples demonstrate ABI encoding and decoding only; they do not document submitting transactions or retrieving contract data from a network.
