Practical overview
When it fits
Use Docmancer when agent-specific memory and project instructions are scattered across local tools, or when you want to carry durable context between supported agents or machines.
Who it is for
- Developers using multiple coding agents who want shared project context.
- Users who need to inspect or retrieve information already recorded by their local agents.
- Developers moving saved coding-agent context between machines.
Documented uses
- Index locally stored agent memories, rules and instructions.
- Build and maintain canonical shared Markdown memory from discovered agent context.
- Ask questions and review cited agent evidence behind the response.
- Back up and restore coding-agent history and setup using documented local archive commands.
Requirements & limits
The core product is documented as requiring no account or API key. Installation requires Python 3.11 or newer and is documented through pipx or uv. The repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed.
- The default local profile uses SQLite FTS5, sqlite-vec and a vendored embedding model.
- Shared Memory is ordinary Markdown in local directories, which users can edit and manage as files.
- Setup presents a plan and privacy warning and waits for confirmation before making changes.
- Automatic recall is enabled only for agents that support it.
- Backup and restore are development-preview commands; the managed Cloud snapshot path remains gated on migration and recovery acceptance.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create and restore a local encrypted agent archive
Preview a local backup, create an encrypted archive, and preview or perform its restore on another machine.
Before you start
- Docmancer installed on the source and destination environments
- A passphrase for the local encrypted archive
- On the destination, Claude Code and Codex closed before restore, as directed by the README
Steps
Preview the source backup with
docmancer backup --dry-run.Create an encrypted local archive with
docmancer backup --local --to ~/Backups/agents.dmbak.On the destination machine, preview the restore with
docmancer restore ~/Backups/agents.dmbak --dry-run.Run
docmancer restore ~/Backups/agents.dmbakto apply the restore.
Expected outcome
The documented restore behavior restores missing history, skips identical files, merges only safe configuration and quarantines divergent sessions.
Guide limitations
- Backup and restore are development-preview commands.
- The README says authentication stores,
.envfiles, literal MCP environment values, caches, logs, telemetry and machine keys are not copied. - Managed Cloud snapshots are not described as generally available; they remain gated on migration and recovery acceptance.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docmancer | Index locally stored agent memories, rules and instructions. | CLI, Self-hosted | The core product is documented as requiring no account or API key. Installation requires Python 3.11 or newer and is documented through pipx or uv. The repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed. |
| Continuum — pouyahasanamreji | Store project lessons so coding agents can retrieve them across conversations. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository documents local Docker Compose and bare-metal development setups. Bare-metal startup requires Node 22.12.0 or later and pnpm 10.33 or later; the Compose path skips these host prerequisites. |
| Haft | Record the problem a project is solving and the options considered. | CLI, Self-hosted |
