Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use the repository when you need the Rust Nimiq Albatross implementation and are prepared to build and configure its client. Consult the separate network and service-node documentation for connection and validator details.

Who it is for

  • Developers building or studying Rust blockchain node software
  • Operators choosing and configuring a Nimiq light, full or history node
  • Validator operators planning a full or history node

Documented uses

  • Compile and install the Nimiq client from source.
  • Create a TOML configuration for a node and launch the client.
  • Select a node type based on documented hardware and network requirements.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and provides source code. The evidence does not include a license designation.

  • A light node has a stated 4 GB RAM minimum and minimal storage requirements; full and history nodes have much higher documented requirements.
  • History nodes require SSD storage and at least 1 TB, increasing to 2 TB when indexing is enabled.
  • Validators require a full or history node, at least 16 GB RAM and accurate clock synchronization for timely block production.
  • Building from source requires Rust plus native compiler, build, package-configuration and OpenSSL development tools.
  • The repository does not guarantee a minimum Rust version for consumers.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and install the Nimiq client from source

Compile the repository and install its client using Cargo.

Before you start

  • Rust installed
  • clang, cmake and pkg-config
  • libssl-dev on Debian/Ubuntu or openssl-devel on Fedora/Red Hat

Steps

  1. Clone the core-rs-albatross repository and change into its directory.

  2. Run cargo build --release.

  3. Install the client with cargo install --path client/.

Expected outcome

The client is installed into $HOME/.cargo/bin.

Guide limitations

  • The project does not guarantee a minimum Rust version for consumers.
  • The repository says it tests two Rust versions older than current stable.
Source-based practical guide

Create a client configuration and launch the node

Prepare a TOML configuration file and start the Nimiq client.

Before you start

  • The Nimiq client built or installed
  • A sample client configuration file

Steps

  1. Generate a sample configuration with cargo run --release --bin nimiq-client, or copy the example configuration file.

  2. Copy the generated example to client.toml and edit it according to the comments and settings guidance.

  3. Run cargo run --release --bin nimiq-client; to use a file at another path, pass -c path/to/client.toml.

Expected outcome

The client launches using the configuration file; by default, it looks for $HOME/.nimiq/client.toml.

Guide limitations

  • The sample configuration must be adjusted for the intended node requirements.
  • The README directs users to its Testnet section for detailed network connection instructions.
