Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an agent needs to carry useful context from earlier sessions into later work, particularly in coding-agent workflows where repeated tasks or ongoing projects benefit from retained history.
Who it is for
- Developers building or operating AI agents across multiple sessions.
- Teams working with coding-agent environments such as Claude Code, OpenClaw, Codex, Gemini, Hermes, Copilot or OpenCode.
- Builders who need searchable history or reusable context from previous agent sessions.
Documented uses
- Add persistent cross-session memory to a coding agent.
- Store compressed agent observations for later semantic retrieval.
- Create a searchable history of agent sessions.
- Inject relevant prior context into a subsequent agent session.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, uses the Apache-2.0 license, and is classified as a CLI and self-hosted developer tool.
- Whether your agent environment is among the documented integrations, including Claude Code, OpenClaw, Codex, Gemini, Hermes, Copilot and OpenCode.
- Whether you need context compression as well as retrieval across sessions.
- Whether a TypeScript, CLI or self-hosted developer tool fits your implementation workflow.
- Whether Apache-2.0 open-source licensing is appropriate for your project.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Claude-Mem for an agent environment
Set up Claude-Mem so it can preserve context across sessions for Claude Code, Grok Bot, OpenCode, or Antigravity CLI.
Before you start
- Node.js 20.0.0 or higher
- For Claude Code, the latest version with plugin support
- Bun and uv, which the installer may auto-install if missing
- SQLite 3, bundled for persistent storage
Steps
Run the command below for the default installation.
npx claude-mem installFor Grok Bot, run the command below; use
--provider hostto opt into the local observer.npx claude-mem install --ide grok-botAlternatively, install for OpenCode with the command below, or for Antigravity CLI with the command below.
npx claude-mem install --ide opencodenpx claude-mem install --ide antigravityFor Claude Code marketplace installation, add
thedotmack/claude-mem, install theclaude-memplugin, and restart Claude Code. After installation, choose a memory provider when prompted, or pass an explicit
--providerflag to skip sign-in interaction.
Expected outcome
Claude-Mem is installed and configured to capture agent activity, compress context, and make prior-session context available to later sessions.
Guide limitations
- The documented marketplace flow applies to Claude Code and requires restarting Claude Code.
- The Grok Bot integration watches chat log files because Grok Bot has no host hooks.
npm install -g claude-meminstalls only the SDK/library and does not register plugin hooks or set up the worker service.- Provider selection and sign-in behavior depend on the installation options described in the documentation.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Mem | Add persistent cross-session memory to a coding agent. | CLI, Self-hosted | The repository is public, uses the Apache-2.0 license, and is classified as a CLI and self-hosted developer tool. No pricing or account requirements are documented in the supplied evidence. |
| Continuum — pouyahasanamreji | Store project lessons so coding agents can retrieve them across conversations. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository documents local Docker Compose and bare-metal development setups. Bare-metal startup requires Node 22.12.0 or later and pnpm 10.33 or later; the Compose path skips these host prerequisites. |
| Haft | Record the problem a project is solving and the options considered. | CLI, Self-hosted |
