Practical overview
When it fits
Use cclsp when a command-line coding assistant needs access to language-server features and you have installed the relevant language server for your project.
Who it is for
- Claude Code users who want language-server-backed code navigation and diagnostics.
- Developers configuring an MCP connection between a coding assistant and language servers.
Documented uses
- Find where a symbol is defined.
- Locate references to functions, variables or types.
- Rename a symbol across a codebase.
- Retrieve language-server diagnostics.
Requirements & limits
The public GitHub repository displays an MIT license. The documented setup uses the CLI and requires Node.js 18+ or Bun.
- cclsp is the MCP bridge; language servers for target languages are separate prerequisites.
- The setup wizard can detect project languages and suggest suitable servers, with installation and Claude MCP integration offered as optional confirmed steps.
- The project lists TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Go, Rust, C/C++, Ruby and PHP among language-server options.
- The project describes trying multiple position combinations to support symbol resolution when coding assistants and language servers count positions differently.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up cclsp for a project
Configure cclsp and Claude MCP for language-server-backed coding assistance.
Before you start
- Node.js 18+ or Bun
- A target-language language server, installed separately, or permission to install one through the setup wizard
- Claude Code for the documented Claude MCP setup
Steps
From the project directory, run the command below.
npx cclsp@latest setupUse the wizard to review detected languages and suggested language servers; optionally allow it to install servers and add cclsp to Claude MCP.
Use the wizard’s verification stage to see the available tools.
Expected outcome
The wizard creates project configuration in `.claude/cclsp.json` by default and can add cclsp to Claude MCP, then reports available tools.
Guide limitations
- Language servers are separate prerequisites; automatic installation is optional and requires user confirmation.
- The documented user-wide configuration option is
npx cclsp@latest setup --user, which creates~/.config/claude/cclsp.json. - This guide covers setup and the wizard’s verification stage, not a specific coding task.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
