Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use BitListen when a live, visual and audio view of Bitcoin network activity is more useful than a transaction-sending or wallet-management workflow.

Who it is for

  • People who want to observe Bitcoin transaction and block activity as it arrives.
  • Developers adapting a JavaScript visualization or building a public activity display.

Documented uses

  • Watch new Bitcoin transactions and blocks propagate through the network.
  • Hear activity as new transactions and blocks arrive.
  • View a Bitcoin price ticker alongside transaction activity.
  • Rebuild the compiled JavaScript after editing the project.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The transaction and block feed is identified as Blockchain.info’s WebSocket API; the price ticker uses Bitstamp’s WebSocket API.
  • Audio is part of the display, supported by Howler.js.
  • The project is written in HTML and JavaScript and uses Reconnecting-Websocket for WebSocket connections.
  • The repository is public and licensed under MIT; the README requests a GitHub link attribution when distributing the software in part or in full.

Source-based practical guide

Build BitListen after changing JavaScript

Regenerate the compiled bitlisten.min.js file after editing the project’s JavaScript.

Before you start

  • Node.js
  • The BitListen project directory
  • Grunt CLI and the project’s dependencies

Steps

  1. Install Node.js.

  2. Install Grunt CLI with sudo npm install -g grunt-cli.

  3. From the project directory, run the command below to install the project’s Grunt version and dependencies.

    Documented command
    npm install
  4. Run grunt to build BitListen and output bitlisten.min.js. Use grunt watch instead to build, serve at http://localhost:8000, and rebuild when source files change.

Expected outcome

A rebuilt bitlisten.min.js file; the watch option also serves the project locally while monitoring source changes.

Guide limitations

  • The guide covers the documented local build workflow, not deployment or verification of the running service.
