Practical overview
When it fits
Use Aura when you want to manage a Bitcoin wallet on iOS or Android with recovery phrases and private keys handled on-device, including when you need multisig or more control over transaction inputs and fees.
Who it is for
- Bitcoin users who want to manage their own keys on a mobile device.
- Users who need multisig wallet creation or import, coin selection, custom fees or watch-only exports.
Documented uses
- Create or recover a Bitcoin wallet and derive receiving addresses.
- Create or import an m-of-n multisig wallet.
- Select coins, set a transaction fee and choose a change address.
- Sign messages, scan or generate QR codes, and export watch-only wallet information.
Requirements & limits
- The app connects to Electrum servers using wallet scripthashes for blockchain data.
- Direct address queries to mempool.space are an optional fallback and disabled by default.
- Wallet records are encrypted before persistence, with the device key protected by the system keychain.
- The repository documents iOS and Android build prerequisites, including Xcode and CocoaPods for iOS and Android Studio and Java 17 for Android.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and run Aura Wallet locally
Set up the React Native project and launch it on an iOS or Android target.
Before you start
- Node.js 22.11 or newer.
- The current React Native environment for the target platform.
- For iOS: Xcode and CocoaPods. For Android: Android Studio and Java 17.
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory: the command below followed by
cd aura-wallet.git clone https://github.com/aurabitcoinwallet/aura-wallet.gitInstall dependencies with the command below.
npm ciStart Metro with the command below.
npm startIn another terminal, run the command below or the command below for the target platform.
npm run iosnpm run androidFor iOS native dependencies, run
bundle installandbundle exec pod installinsideios/when required by the local toolchain.
Expected outcome
The project is set up to start Metro and launch a platform build using the documented iOS or Android scripts.
Guide limitations
- The iOS dependency installation commands are conditional on the local toolchain.
- The README does not describe interactive wallet-use steps.
Run Aura Wallet's verification checks
Run the repository's documented verification and dependency-audit scripts.
Before you start
- A local Aura Wallet checkout with dependencies installed.
- The documented Node.js requirement: version 22.11 or newer.
Steps
From the repository directory, run the command below.
npm run verifyRun the command below.
npm run audit:dependencies
Expected outcome
The verification script exercises linting, TypeScript, Jest, release invariants, encryption and network security tests, official Bitcoin vectors, and a signing self-test; the separate script audits dependencies.
Guide limitations
- The README describes automated coverage but does not report results for a specific local run.
- GitHub Actions also runs CodeQL and builds the Android application; those checks are not part of the two local commands listed here.
