Arc

Arc is an EVM-compatible layer 1 blockchain and a public Rust repository containing software for its execution and consensus nodes. The project describes the network as using Malachite BFT consensus, accepting USDC for transaction gas and targeting deterministic sub-second finality. Its repository includes installation instructions, developer prerequisites and a recipe for launching a local testnet.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Arc when you want to explore an EVM-compatible testnet or its Rust node implementation, especially for development involving USDC gas or Malachite BFT consensus.

Who it is for

  • Developers prototyping EVM-compatible applications that use USDC for transaction gas.
  • Teams evaluating node operation and consensus on Arc’s testnet.
  • Engineers exploring transaction or settlement workflows that depend on deterministic finality.

Documented uses

  • Obtain Arc node binaries or Docker images and follow the documented node configuration and startup guidance.
  • Build and test an EVM-compatible application against Arc’s testnet.
  • Launch a multi-node local testnet for development and send transaction load to it.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies its license as Apache-2.0. Arc is described as being in testnet; the node software is alpha software.

  • The project separates execution and consensus binaries and provides documentation for each.
  • The README documents obtaining binaries or Docker images, building from source, and launching a local testnet.
  • The listed development toolchain is substantial; Hardhat’s documented Node.js support is limited to even-numbered versions.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Launch Arc’s local testnet

Start the documented local environment of execution and consensus nodes with monitoring and a block explorer.

Before you start

  • Docker and the repository’s listed development tools, including Rust, Node.js, Foundry, Hardhat, Protobuf, TypeScript, Yarn and Buf.
  • Clone the repository and initialize its Git submodules with git submodule update --init --recursive.

Steps

  1. Obtain the Arc node binaries or Docker images using the installation documentation.

  2. From the repository, run the command below to launch the local environment.

    Documented command
    make testnet
  3. Use the command below to send transaction load; the documented usage accepts RATE and TIME values.

    Documented command
    make testnet-load
  4. Run the command below to stop the testnet, or the command below to clean up resources.

    Documented command
    make testnet-down
    Documented command
    make testnet-clean

Expected outcome

A local testnet with five execution nodes, five consensus nodes, Prometheus, Grafana and Blockscout.

Guide limitations

  • Arc is identified by the project as testnet software and the node implementation as alpha software undergoing audits.
  • The README documents these commands but does not establish that they have been executed in a particular environment.
