Practical overview
When it fits
Use amux when multiple coding-agent sessions need a shared task queue, status visibility or a coordination layer around supported CLI agents.
Who it is for
- Developers running multiple AI coding agents on software projects.
- Teams that need a shared task board and session monitoring for parallel agent work.
- Operators who want to self-host a coding-agent coordination dashboard.
Documented uses
- Register and start coding-agent sessions linked to project directories.
- Monitor session status and recent output, and send tasks to agents.
- Create, assign, claim and track shared work items across agents and people.
- Use a REST API to interact with sessions and board tasks.
Requirements & limits
The documentation describes self-hosting as free and amux Cloud as a paid monthly option. The homepage states MIT + Commons Clause licensing.
- Self-hosted setup requires macOS or Linux, tmux 3.2 or later, and at least one supported agent CLI installed and signed in.
- The documented supported CLI list includes Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and OpenCode.
- The dashboard runs locally over HTTPS by default at https://localhost:8824.
- The shared board uses atomic task claiming so multiple agents do not claim the same item.
- The dashboard is described as a mobile-capable PWA, including home-screen installation on iOS and Android.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a self-hosted amux session and dashboard
Install amux, start a registered coding-agent session and open its local dashboard.
Before you start
- macOS or Linux
- tmux 3.2 or later
- At least one supported agent CLI installed and signed in: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or OpenCode
Steps
Install amux using the documented one-line installer or from source.
Register a session with a name and project directory using
amux register --dir.Start the session with
amux start, then launch the dashboard withamux serve.Open the local dashboard at
https://localhost:8824; send a task withamux sendor inspect recent output withamux peek.
Expected outcome
A registered agent session runs in tmux and can be viewed and interacted with through the local dashboard or CLI.
Guide limitations
- The documented prerequisite is an installed and signed-in agent CLI; the guide does not install or configure that agent account.
- The documented default dashboard address uses HTTPS with a self-signed certificate.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| amux | Register and start coding-agent sessions linked to project directories. | Web, macOS, Linux, iOS, Mobile, Cloud, Self-hosted | The documentation describes self-hosting as free and amux Cloud as a paid monthly option. The homepage states MIT + Commons Clause licensing. |
| Agentfm Core | Run a containerized agent in a Podman sandbox on a worker machine | Desktop, Docker, Self-hosted | The README lists desktop installers for macOS and Linux; it says the Windows app is in progress. Its desktop quick start says the bundled node connects to the public mesh. The README notes that the v1 installers are unsigned and macOS may block the first launch. |
| Plano | Route incoming requests to agents based on their declared roles. | Self-hosted, Server | Plano is public source code under the Apache-2.0 license. The README describes hosted Plano models free of charge in the US-central region for a first-run developer experience; for production scale it points to running models locally or contacting the project for API keys. |
