Practical overview
When it fits
Use it for code-level study and controlled experiments with Alpenglow consensus, rather than as a documented production blockchain service.
Who it is for
- Protocol researchers examining consensus resilience, latency or bandwidth requirements.
- Rust developers prototyping or evaluating consensus nodes in controlled test clusters.
Documented uses
- Start a two-node local cluster and observe node progress.
- Simulate Rotor resilience and Alpenglow latency and bandwidth requirements.
- Define peer addresses, generate configuration files and run standalone prototype nodes.
- Use repository recipes for development tasks such as tests, benchmarks, fuzzing and coverage.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- The local cluster example starts two nodes communicating via UDP on localhost.
- Simulation settings are configured by editing constants in the simulation source.
- The standalone prototype requires peers to be specified manually and does not include gossip or stake manipulation.
- Some simulations require a public ping dataset downloaded with the provided script.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start the documented two-node local cluster
Launch the repository’s local example cluster and view node progress in the console.
Before you start
- A local checkout of the Alpenglow repository.
- The repository’s Rust project environment.
Steps
From the repository directory, run
./run.sh.Observe console output showing progress from the two nodes communicating over UDP on localhost.
Expected outcome
A local two-node cluster starts, with node progress printed in the console.
Guide limitations
- This example is a local cluster, not a production network.
- The instructions do not specify an operating-system support matrix.
Run the protocol simulations
Run the simulations binary for documented resilience, latency and bandwidth analysis.
Before you start
- A local checkout and Rust toolchain.
- For the latency simulation, the public ping dataset downloaded using the repository script.
Steps
For simulations requiring the ping dataset, run
./download_data.sh.Run
RUST_LOG="simulations=debug" cargo run --release --bin=simulations.
Expected outcome
The simulations binary runs protocol simulations, including Rotor resilience and latency and bandwidth requirements.
Guide limitations
- Simulation configuration is changed through constant values in
src/bin/simulations/main.rs. - The ping dataset is specifically noted as a prerequisite for some simulations, including latency.
