Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when the target website can legitimately be inspected and recreated and the intended output is a Next.js application. The workflow is especially relevant for migrations, source-code recovery and structured frontend prototyping.
Who it is for
- Developers migrating sites they own from platforms such as WordPress, Webflow or Squarespace
- Teams recovering a modern codebase from a live site when the original source is unavailable
- Learners studying production website layouts, animations and responsive behavior
- Teams evaluating AI coding agents on website recreation tasks
Documented uses
- Prepare a Next.js and React project from a website reference
- Extract layout, styling, assets and interaction details into implementation specifications
- Generate a starting point for rebuilding a site in a modern TypeScript codebase
- Compare the assembled result visually with the reference site
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The documented prerequisites are Node.js 24 or later and a supported AI coding agent. No pricing or account requirement for the primary workflow is specified.
- The documented output is a Next.js application using App Router, React 19 and strict TypeScript.
- The supported agent environments are Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode and Cursor; Claude Code with Opus 5.5 is identified as recommended.
- Browser access is required for the cloning stage.
- The workflow includes asset downloading, interaction inspection and visual comparison rather than only static markup generation.
- An alternative frontend output target is not documented and would require modification.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the website-cloning template
Prepare a standalone project and check its dependencies before cloning a website.
Before you start
- Node.js 24 or later
- Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode or Cursor
- An AI coding agent with browser access for the later cloning stage
Steps
Create a copy from the GitHub template or ask the coding agent to clone the repository into a new folder.
Remove the copied project's origin remote when using the README's recommended setup prompt.
Install the project dependencies.
Run npm run check and leave the project ready for a cloning task.
Expected outcome
A standalone Next.js template project prepared for the documented /clone-website workflow.
Guide limitations
- This setup recipe does not document deployment or the result of cloning a particular target.
- Another frontend output format is not documented and would require modification.
Start a documented website recreation task
Give a supported AI coding agent a website URL for the template's cloning workflow.
Before you start
- A prepared template project
- Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode or Cursor
- Browser access enabled in the agent
- A website URL
Steps
Open the prepared project in the coding agent.
Run /clone-website followed by the target URL, such as /clone-website https://example.com.
Wait for the agent to perform the documented reconnaissance, foundation, specification, build and assembly stages.
Ask the agent for further changes after the site has been built.
Expected outcome
The agent is instructed to recreate the referenced site as a Next.js application and can then receive requested changes.
Guide limitations
- The README does not provide a compatibility guarantee for every target website.
- Use must respect the target site's ownership, reproduction rights and terms of service.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Website Cloner Template | Prepare a Next.js and React project from a website reference | CLI, Self-hosted | The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The documented prerequisites are Node.js 24 or later and a supported AI coding agent. No pricing or account requirement for the primary workflow is specified. |
| Spectra | Clarify requirements and compare approaches before proposing a change. | CLI, Desktop | The README lists a macOS and Windows desktop app, and a Homebrew installation for macOS. The CLI is published through npm and requires Node.js 22.14 or newer. |
| Skills — michaelshimeles | Install reusable task-specific skills into a coding-agent setup. | CLI | The repository README provides an npx installation command for most coding agents and describes automatic or explicit skill invocation in Claude Code. |
