Practical overview
When it fits
Use the CLI when you want model-generated filenames for media in a specified path and have a supported model provider configured. For video files, arrange the documented ffmpeg prerequisite as well.
Who it is for
- People who want descriptive filenames for collections of images or videos.
- Users who want to process files from a command line with a chosen model provider.
- People who need consistent filename language, length or case conventions.
Documented uses
- Generate filenames that describe image contents.
- Rename videos based on their contents.
- Apply a preferred output language, character limit or filename case style.
- Include files in subdirectories and set the maximum number of video frames to extract.
Requirements & limits
The project is available as a public GitHub repository under the GPL-3.0 license. The README also points to a separate desktop app at airenamer.app.
- Ollama is the default provider; LM Studio can use its loaded model, and OpenAI requires an API key.
- Video processing requires ffmpeg and offers a maximum-frame setting.
- Provider, model, language, filename length, case style, subdirectory handling and custom prompt are documented CLI options.
- Flag values are saved in an ai-renamer.json configuration file for later runs.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run AI Renamer on a folder with Ollama
Use the CLI to process a path with Ollama as the model provider.
Before you start
- Node.js tooling to run the package with npx.
- Ollama and at least one installed language model.
- ffmpeg as an additional requirement when renaming videos.
Steps
Run the command below, replacing
/pathwith the folder to process.npx ai-renamer /pathOllama is the default provider; the first launch tries to select the Llava model automatically.
If needed, specify a model with the command below.
npx ai-renamer /path --provider=ollama --model=llava:13b
Expected outcome
AI Renamer processes the specified path using the selected Ollama model to generate filenames from file contents.
Guide limitations
- Video renaming requires ffmpeg.
- The documented automatic model selection may not succeed; a model can then be specified explicitly.
Run AI Renamer with a model loaded in LM Studio
Configure the CLI to use the model currently loaded in LM Studio.
Before you start
- Node.js tooling to run the package with npx.
- LM Studio with a model loaded.
- ffmpeg as an additional requirement when renaming videos.
Steps
Run the command below, replacing
/pathwith the folder to process.npx ai-renamer /path --provider=lm-studioAI Renamer automatically selects the model loaded in LM Studio.
Expected outcome
The CLI processes the specified path using the model loaded in LM Studio.
Guide limitations
- Video renaming requires ffmpeg.
