Agglayer

Agglayer is a work-in-progress Rust service that receives updates from connected blockchain networks, verifies their validity and sends them to L1 for final settlement. Its stated aim is to provide a common language for secure, atomic interoperability among heterogeneous chains.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use the repository when evaluating or contributing to a Rust implementation for coordinating updates across heterogeneous chains, or when following its documented build and test workflows.

Who it is for

  • Blockchain developers exploring cross-chain coordination.
  • Rust teams building or studying interoperability components.
  • Contributors working with the repository’s pessimistic-proof tests and documentation.

Documented uses

  • Receive updates from Agglayer-connected chains.
  • Verify the validity of those updates.
  • Send verified updates to L1 for final settlement.
  • Build and run the documented Rust repository test suite.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The implementation is explicitly identified as work in progress; APIs and configuration may change.
  • The README says the code is still being audited and advises contacting the Polygon team about production use.
  • The listed development requirements include stable Rustup, protoc, nextest, cargo-make, cargo-insta and Go.
  • Docker is required if rebuilding the pessimistic proof is enabled; local proving is described as not recommended and requiring roughly 40–50 GB of RAM.
  • The README identifies Succinct prover-network access via submission of a unique Ethereum address as a prerequisite for that network.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Clone and build the Agglayer repository

Prepare a local build of the Rust implementation.

Before you start

  • Stable Rustup
  • protoc
  • nextest
  • cargo-make
  • cargo-insta

Steps

  1. Clone the repository with the command below.

    Documented command
    git clone https://github.com/agglayer/agglayer
  2. Change into the agglayer directory.

  3. Build it with the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo build

Expected outcome

The repository is built locally.

Guide limitations

  • The project is work in progress, and APIs and configuration may change.
  • The README says the code is still being audited and advises contacting the Polygon team about production use.
Source-based practical guide

Run the pessimistic-proof test suite

Run the documented test suite using native Rust execution and its test inputs.

Before you start

  • The Agglayer repository cloned locally
  • Stable Rustup and the listed repository software requirements

Steps

  1. From the repository, run the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo test --package pessimistic-proof-test-suite
  2. Use the test inputs in crates/pessimistic-proof-test-suite/data/.

Expected outcome

The pessimistic-proof test suite is invoked with its documented test inputs.

Guide limitations

  • This is a repository test workflow, not evidence of a deployed service or successful test execution.
  • The README notes that modifying proof code does not automatically update the committed precompiled ELF binary.
