Agent

Agent is an open-source Rust command-line agent that runs on a user's machine to handle DevOps and application operations. Its background Autopilot process is intended to keep applications running and ask for human input when needed.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Agent when you want a CLI-based agent running on your own machine for ongoing application operations or documented DevOps tasks, and can provide model credentials and the required host setup.

Who it is for

  • Developers and operations teams managing applications and infrastructure from machines they control.
  • Teams seeking a background agent for recurring operational tasks, with human input requested when needed.

Documented uses

  • Initialize an agent with an application's technology stack.
  • Run an autonomous background process intended to keep applications running.
  • Generate infrastructure code, debug Kubernetes, configure CI/CD and automate deployments.
  • Index and semantically search infrastructure code in Terraform, Kubernetes, Dockerfiles and GitHub Actions.

Requirements & limits

The repository documents CLI installation options for Linux, macOS and Windows, including Homebrew, release binaries and Docker. Use requires either a Stakpak API key or configured provider credentials; the README lists Anthropic, OpenAI and Gemini options.

  • Autopilot is a background process; remote-VM use requires Docker accessible to the current user.
  • The README recommends at least 2 GB RAM for reliable Autopilot and sandbox runs and strongly recommends swap on small Linux hosts.
  • Agent settings such as model, allowed tools and approval behavior are configured in profiles; schedules and notification routing are separate runtime settings.
  • The project describes secret substitution and network-level guardrails as security features, but these descriptions do not guarantee safe operation.
  • The project is open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Initialize the CLI and start Autopilot

Set up Agent to recognize your applications and start its background autonomous process.

Before you start

  • A machine on which to install the Stakpak CLI.
  • For remote-VM Autopilot: Docker accessible to the current user; 2 GB or more of RAM is recommended, and swap is strongly recommended on small Linux hosts.
  • A Stakpak API key or configured provider credentials, as described in the README.

Steps

  1. Install the CLI using an installation option documented in the repository README.

  2. Authenticate with a Stakpak API key or configure provider credentials.

  3. Run stakpak init to have the agent understand your applications and technology stack.

  4. Run stakpak autopilot up to start the agent in the background.

Expected outcome

The CLI is initialized for the applications and the Autopilot process is started.

Guide limitations

  • This setup sequence does not configure schedules, channels or notification destinations.
  • Linux user services may require linger to survive logout.
  • The README recommends running stakpak autopilot doctor as a deployment-readiness check before first boot.
