Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use amux when multiple coding-agent sessions need a shared task queue, status visibility or a coordination layer around supported CLI agents.

Who it is for

  • Developers running multiple AI coding agents on software projects.
  • Teams that need a shared task board and session monitoring for parallel agent work.
  • Operators who want to self-host a coding-agent coordination dashboard.

Documented uses

  • Register and start coding-agent sessions linked to project directories.
  • Monitor session status and recent output, and send tasks to agents.
  • Create, assign, claim and track shared work items across agents and people.
  • Use a REST API to interact with sessions and board tasks.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The documentation describes self-hosting as free and amux Cloud as a paid monthly option. The homepage states MIT + Commons Clause licensing.

  • Self-hosted setup requires macOS or Linux, tmux 3.2 or later, and at least one supported agent CLI installed and signed in.
  • The documented supported CLI list includes Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and OpenCode.
  • The dashboard runs locally over HTTPS by default at https://localhost:8824.
  • The shared board uses atomic task claiming so multiple agents do not claim the same item.
  • The dashboard is described as a mobile-capable PWA, including home-screen installation on iOS and Android.

Source-based practical guide

Set up a self-hosted amux session and dashboard

Install amux, start a registered coding-agent session and open its local dashboard.

Before you start

  • macOS or Linux
  • tmux 3.2 or later
  • At least one supported agent CLI installed and signed in: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or OpenCode

Steps

  1. Install amux using the documented one-line installer or from source.

  2. Register a session with a name and project directory using amux register --dir .

  3. Start the session with amux start , then launch the dashboard with amux serve.

  4. Open the local dashboard at https://localhost:8824; send a task with amux send or inspect recent output with amux peek .

Expected outcome

A registered agent session runs in tmux and can be viewed and interacted with through the local dashboard or CLI.

Guide limitations

  • The documented prerequisite is an installed and signed-in agent CLI; the guide does not install or configure that agent account.
  • The documented default dashboard address uses HTTPS with a self-signed certificate.
