Practical overview
When it fits
Use Revela when you have Move smart-contract bytecode and need high-level source for inspection; the documented compatibility is for Aptos.
Who it is for
- Developers reviewing Aptos Move contracts when only bytecode is available.
- Security reviewers who need recovered source as an input to contract analysis.
Documented uses
- Decompile a local Move bytecode file with the CLI.
- Recover high-level source for inspection and analysis.
- Use recovered source as input to a Move compiler, as described in the project documentation.
Requirements & limits
The repository describes Revela as open source under the Apache License. It documents a Rust build and CLI installation workflow for macOS and Linux, and also mentions an online version.
- The project documentation identifies Aptos as the compatible blockchain; it does not claim compatibility with other ecosystems.
- The CLI workflow accepts a bytecode file path through
--bytecodeor-b. - Building from source requires a Rust compiler; the documented installation uses Cargo.
- The README says recovered source can be fed into the Move compiler, but decompilation is a source-inspection step rather than a safety determination.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Revela from its repository
Build the Revela command-line binary from the repository root.
Before you start
- A Rust compiler
- A checkout of the Revela repository
Steps
From the repository root, run the command below.
cargo build -p revelaLocate the resulting
revelabinary intarget/debug.
Expected outcome
A Revela CLI binary is produced in the repository’s `target/debug` directory.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers building only; it does not cover installing or running the binary.
Decompile a local Move bytecode file with the CLI
Pass a Move bytecode file to Revela for decompilation.
Before you start
- The Revela CLI installed or built
- A local Move bytecode file
Steps
Run
revela --bytecode, or use the short option-b.Replace `` with the path to the bytecode file.
Expected outcome
Revela processes the specified bytecode file for decompilation into high-level source code.
Guide limitations
- The README identifies Aptos as the compatible blockchain; it does not document other blockchain compatibility.
